head fakes & handshakes

head aches and climax fakes
are lies i define
hand made milkshakes
the strawberry kind
quasi interlude
of the hypnotic mind
head fakes and handshakes
nerf basketball time

this is the game we choose
maybe you win – maybe you lose

head fakes and handshakes
my mind’s mystified
why you selected these words
without a ticket to ride
cognac from the bottle
until edgar allen died
a three legged lunatic
frenchman was fried

these are the words you choose
but you’ve got to pay your dues
if you want to sing the blues

sha-la-la

head fakes and handshakes
perfumed smoke
head fakes and handshakes

Editor’s Note:

A few months ago, a friend who was once mine was congratulating me on my lyrical wordsmith abilities and he mentioned that he’d like to pen some lyrics under the title head fakes & handshakes. He added that he was unable to produce anything substantively.
I told him that I’d compose something and let him examine it for his approval .. or disapproval.
Now, it was obvious that this phrase was Sports related .. and so I sat down and began working on it. But I was unable to satisfactorily complete the task.
Instead of giving up – I decided to spoof the phrase .. and write something silly and fun. Even senseless. I mean it’s not like there haven’t been similar works in the past. For instance: Strawberry Alarm Clock’s Incense & Peppermints.

* Here are some ‘diddies’ to look for in this Piece =

My 2nd line --> are lies i define
SAC I&P 2nd line --> Dead kings, many things I can't define.
.
My 4th line --> the strawberry kind. Blatant representation.
.
My 10th line --> maybe you win - maybe you lose
SAC I&P 6th line --> Little to win, but nothing to lose
.
My 14th line --> without a ticket to ride . Beatles song --> Ticket To Ride
.
My 20th & 21st lines --> but you've got to pay your dues if you want to sing the blues are . culled right off Ringo's It Don't Come Easy song, written with George Harrison
.
My 15th & 16th lines --> cognac from the bottle until edgar allen died . First, Cognac is my preferred drink .. and secondly, the edgar allen is borrowed from my 'two old ghosts or dr. seuss meets edgar allen poe' Piece .. or as John Lennon used to say, "I like to steal from meself". :-)
.
My 17th line --> a three legged lunatic
SAC I&P 17th line --> A yardsick for lunatics, one point of view . Plus there's three feet in a yard ..
.
My 19th line --> these are the words you choose
SAC I&P 5th line --> Who cares what games we choose
Plus nerf basketball is a game.
.
My 25th line --> perfumed smoke is the dictionary definition of Incense
.
My 29th line --> cockeyed hippie
SAC I&P 14th line --> Tune-a by the cockeyed world in two
.
My 31st line --> gambling bippy . is stolen from Rowan & Martin's Laugh In .. "You bet your bippy"and he and I used to watch that show, years ago when we were roommates
Finally, .. of course the sha-la-la
.
.
Have fun .. and enjoy this Piece. J

Dear Blog

Monday September 29, 2008

Dear Blog

Just a few simple, quick thoughts on the first Presidential Debate of 2008 held at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on Friday September 26, 2008 from 9 PM until 10:30 PM (one hour and a half).

First, there has been much said and written, already and I will not rehash nor ‘cut & paste’ any of the Pundits ‘talking points’.
My honest humble opinion is that there was no obvious winner. Nor an obvious loser. But I was not satisfied with either Candidate. They, both, were too robotic for me. They spouted out facts & figures and dates as if they were perusing a book (or ‘talking points’ sheet). And that’s the problem. Talk to me .. sincerely. Talk to me. Don’t make it sound as if you’re teaching something to. Just EXPLAIN it to me. In plain, specific words from the Heart .. not from a memory bank.

To add a bit of levity concerning my mistrust of .. well, everybody. I trust nobody .. but at the top of my list is Politicians. They’ll do/say anything to get elected .. and then, they don’t do most of what they say they will.
Obviously, there’s tons o’ money that can be .. proliferated (sic).
That said:
We, still, must choose. Choose who’s best / not who’s perfect.
The levity = I was impressed at McCain’s ability to present so many facts and details and not misspeak .. and to say a lot of things without rambling.
He was better than I’ve ever seen him over what we see and have seen for 8 years.
THEN, it hit me ! I remembered the 3 Presidential Debates of ’04. In the first, Dubya Bush looked like an idot to Kerry’s King.
THEN, they hooked up that earpiece to Bush (remember seeing the coiled wire going up his back, under his Coat)
THEN, in subsequent Debates, Bush repeated what Karl Rove was telling him over that radioized earpiece. And he did his best (yes  HIS best) presentation.
Once I realized how McCain was excelling – in my mind, I began seeing a split screen where someone was reading ‘talking points’ from another room and McCain hearing them and repeating, onstage.

I give Moderator, Jim Lehrer a ‘C’. He tried, at times, and at other times, I thought he slept. I mean – once, when it was time to move on, he not only allowed McCain to counterpoint when it clearly was not his turn nor time .. Lehrer not only allowed McCain to rebut out of turn but gave him 2 minutes.
Whazup wit dat ?

Okay, I did read that McCain was disrepectful and snooty and just like every Religious Conservative I’ve ever witnessed – THOUGHT he was right and Obama wrong ON EVERYTHING !
Obama, on the other hand, was respectful and pointed out where the 2 men agreed and disagreed.
But being a nice guy will lose this Election for the Democrats .. if they are not careful.

Still – too borrr-ing. Like 2 Rock‘em Sock’em Robots .. that didn’t move nor throw punches. But there WAS a red one and a blue one.

The Washington Redskins. Period.
That’s right the Washington freaking Redskins ..
beat the Dallas Crybabies, 26 – 24, yesterday in the two teams’ last ever game in Texas Stadium. That’s right .. the game was played in Dallas.
Now, I have had serious doubts about Redskins QB Jason Campbell and you’ve read about it, right here .. by me. But the Jason Campbell that we’ve seen in the last 3 weeks is not the player that I doubted nor the one who’s played up until the last 3 weeks. I sure hope it continues.
God bless him. I darn sure don’t mind seeing him changing and becoming much better .. causing me to admit judgemental error.

Campbell completed 20 passes in 31 attempts for 231 yards and 2 TDs ..
but most importantly NO INTERCEPTIONS !
Dallas’ Tony Romo was 28 / 47 – 300 – 1 and very importantly, a Pick.
Clinton Portis ran 21 times for 121 yards and although he didn’t score - he did not Fumble.
First round Fantasy Draft Pick, RB Marian Barber tallied 26 yards on 8 carries for the Cowbabies.
Redskins Rookie Safety, Chris Horton intercepted his 3rd pass of the Season .. and is getting meaningful Plays on Defense.

Terrell Owens did manage a Score but was not a factor. Basicly basic.

In the best Division in the NFL (the NFC East) ..
The Giants are 3 – 0 with a Bye, this week
while the Redskins and Cowbabies are 3 – 1
and the Iggles are 2 - 2 after their loose, last night at the Bears.

Hail to the Redskins for the sweetest ‘W’ in the World .. against the Cowbabies .. in Texas.

The Redskins next game is at Lincoln Financial Field, Sunday, October 5 at 1:00 PM verses the Philadelphia Iggles.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, it can viewed it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … :itsover: for the Nationals. Season complete.
There are two rounds of Playoffs And then, a World Series .. and I may have something to say about them as future Dear Blog’s appear at this URL.

Jimmie Johnson won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Race, the Kansas 400 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Serptember 28 televised by ABC. Carl Edwards finished 2nd and Greg Biffle finished 3rd.
The Race was the 4th of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 40th, 11th and 28th, respectively. The other JGR member who is slated to replace Tony Stewart, next year ( 18 year old Joey Lagano ) finished 39th.
These 3 top Driver’s are currently ranked 11th, 10th and 12th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, October 5 at 2 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal is doing well.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 76 degrees with a overnight low of 52 degrees.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 85 degrees and with an overnight low of 72 degrees.

Only Love Can Break A Heart

Words by Hal David / Music by Burt Bacharach

( as simple as the lyrics are – sung with emotion,
Gene Pitney sells this song .. )
.
.
.
Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it, again.

.Last night I hurt you
but darlin’ remember this:

.Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again. Mmm, mm.

You know I’m sorry,
I’ll prove it with just one kiss.

.Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

.Give me a chance to make up
for the harm I’ve done.

Try to forgive me
and let’s keep the two of us one.
Please let me hold you
and love you
for always and always

Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

5500 Years From Home

In addition to the 250 plus Lyrical Pieces that I have written and received Copyright Protection from the Library Of Congress - I have, also, written a Novel (copyrighted but not Published) entitled 5500 Years From Home. I am currently working on a 2nd Book entitled The Island that I am about 1/2 the way towards completion, at this date.
.
I have decided to, occasionally, post excerpts from 5500 Years From Home in this Blog space.
Today, we peruse the 2nd page of Chapter 4 – Page 24.

.
Enjoy !

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter Four ... page 24

Silent Encounter

That is where he discovered what would have normally frightened him beyond belief. It was a extrinsic being. Possibly extraterrestrial. Yet, Charles was not afraid nor did he feel a sense of shock. He seemed artificially at ease and knew he had a procedure to perform and was prepared to do so. It was obvious, now, that all communication would be extrasensory.

The Extrinsic Orb Being (EOB) telepathically explained that he was unable to perform the function that his embodiment required to continue to sustain life.

Charles’ precognition thoughts were that he did not have any of his medical instruments before succumbing to the realization that he was not going to require them. He was telepathically instructed to make hand and arm gestures and to perceive a positive influence that would necessitate a health maintenance form of care and recovery. As he accentuated every movement and rumination, he could tell that his handiwork was concluding with a genuine consummation.

It wasn’t until Charles was no longer receiving practitioner’s tutelage that his eyes began to fill with the vision of what this Orb’s inner sanction characteristics were. There were dials and controls on nearly every portion of the inner ship with absolutely no buttons nor switches for calibration. No words, markings nor hieroglyphics adorned any visible area. The scant furnishings were disheveled and the EOB lay on a floor area that was smooth and clean. There was a luminous glow but no lights were conspicuous. Everything appeared to be the same light bluish hue. Charles could feel his body in a weightlessness levity. What was surprising was that he could see quite clearly inside the area although he had not taken the time to put on his eyeglasses. And the tip of the thumb on his right hand that had been severed in a freak occurrence while operating an ailing horse just two years ago was healed and fully responsive. Not even a scar.
.
.
… He was telepathically instructed ..

Dear Blog

Monday September 22, 2008

Dear Blog

Look – I’ve mentioned it before, here in my Blog .. that I am an Independent political voter.
In my past, Nationally, I have voted for Nixon, Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush. And I have, indeed, voted for McGovern, Carter, Clinton and Kerry.
I did not vote in the Gore / Dubya Bush election. I did not like Dubya from his Savings & Loan scam during his daddy’s presidency .. but I wasn’t buying Gore’s gloom and doom environmental speak. I was wrong about Gore and I, freely, admit it.
My reason was during the 1980’s, the Government told us that R-22 residential coolant (what’s in our home Air Conditioning Units) was destroying the O-Zone. All HVAC Class ‘A’ Contractors would have to buy ‘Reclaim Machines’ to avoid that gas from escaping into our atmosphere. I had to spend $ 3,500 on this machine or lose my License.
After the fact, those Government environmentalists admitted that R-22 wasn’t the cause of thinning O-Zone levels. Still, somebody made a fortune selling those machines.

But, I have digressed.
Today, I want to speak to scare tactics used by the Conservatives. Last election, it was, ‘for God’s sake – get out and vote for Bush .. OR GAYS WILL BE ALLOWED TO MARRY EACH OTHER !
Now, I’m not gay. Never have nor ever will have a homosexual experience.
But gays getting married is not going to harm anything. Sure, I may prefer it to be called a Civil Union .. but it really doesn’t matter. They, surely, deserve legal protection in their partnerships. But it’s not like they are going to become straight if they can’t marry.

Now, this election season, the scare tactic is the mass e-mails claiming that Barack Obama is a radical Muslim. My neighbor showed me one he printed out and told me he wanted to vote Democrat, this time because he was not satisfied with Dubya .. but that he couldn’t vote for a Muslim.
I swear – I wanted to scream. I asked my neighbor if he had checked out the accusation for accuracy and he simply said that the e-mail came from a reliable source. So, we go into his house and Googled Obama’s past. After researching several pertinent websites, my neighbor admitted that Obama was ‘probably’ not a Muslim. He asked me why somebody would send such an e-mail and I could not stop myself from answering, “because ignorant people would believe it !”
I may have saved one idiot vote in 2008 .. but there were over a thousand recipients on that mass e-mail. And each one was asked to send it to their friends.
I, still, want to scream !

Now, onto more positive news.
My Herndon High School’s Class of ’68 is holding another informal get-together. We are meeting for a Dinner Date on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 7 PM at O’Faolain’s Irish Pub in Sterling, Virginia.
Mary Ellen Duzan-Hawley is our Leader and along with the sexy, sassy Kerry Ragette Rehkamp .. has chosen this time and location.
The entertainment will be provided by funnyman, Harold Cockerill.
Regrettably, I missed our 40 Year Reunion during this Summer .. and I was unavailable for a similar get-together during early July.
I will, happily, attend this soirée and look forward to seeing my old pals.

I have returned from the Keys for a short period of time due to my U.S. Supreme Court appearance. Soon or later, I will be gone for good.
Just thinking about it – I’m reminded of the old Jerry Jeff Walker tune
(edited) …

Pack up all my dishes
Make note of all good wishes
Say goodbye to the landlord for me
That son of a bitch has always bored me
Throw out them DC papers
And that moldy box of Vanilla Wafers
Adios to all this concrete
Gonna get me some Key West Duval Street
Chorus
If I can just get off of this Capital Beltway
Without getting killed or caught caught caught
I'd be down that road in a cloud of the smoke I toke
For an Oldtown plot that I still ain’t bought bought bought

The Washington Redskins won their 2nd game of the young Season by defeating the previously undefeated Arizona Cardinals, 24-17 before a sellout crowd at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.
The Redskins improved their record to 2-1 on the arm of QB Jason Campbell and the legs of RB Clinton Portis. Campbell completed 22 of 30 passes for 193 yards and 2 TDs and most importantly – no Interceptions.
Portis ran for 68 yards on 21 carries and added 2 Receptions for another 19 yards with a TD .. and, again, most importantly – no Fumbles.
On the other hand, on Defense CB Carlos Rogers Intercepted Cardinals QB Kurt Warner and LB Rocky McIntosh recovered a Fumble by RB Edgerrin James.
WR Santana Moss caught a TD pass for the 2nd straight week and TE Chris Cooley added 72 yards on 7 Receptions .. with no naked pictures of himself on his Blog, this week.

The Redskins next game is at Texas Stadium, Sunday, September 28 at 4:15 PM verses the Dallas Cowbabies.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, it can viewed it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … :crickets:
Enough said.

Greg Biffle won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Dover 400 NSCS sponsored by Principal Financial Group at the Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. It was Biffle’s 2nd straight win. Matt Kenseth finished 2nd and Carl Edwards finished 3rd.
The Race was the 2nd of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 11th, 34th and 43rd respectively.
These 3 Driver’s are currently ranked 7th, 11th and 12th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Kansas 400 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Serptember 28 at 1 PM and televised by ABC .. followed by the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, October 5 at 2 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal is doing well.

Thank God, Josephine has petered out and will not be a threat in Key West, Florida .. where many of my friends and associates reside AND is my future home.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 88 degrees with a overnight low of 79 degrees.

backstage at HHS Ronnie Dove Show; circa 1967

Friday; September 19, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

1967
Backstage at the HHS Ronnie Dove Show
Herndon High School

Note: This account contains some Adult Language.

Ronnie Dove was born September 9, 1940 in Herndon, Virginia and attended Herndon’s public Schools from 1st Grade through High School. One of his good friends in High School was an athlete by the name of James Ashwell.

Upon graduation, Dove joined the U.S. Coast Guard and was stationed for 4 years in Baltimore, Maryland. That’s where he embarked on a singing career covering tunes by Elvis Presley and other pop idols of the day.
After his military obligation was complete, he formed a Band called Ronnie Dove and the Belltones and spent the next 4 years playing local clubs with them.
In 1964, he split from the Belltones and began recording songs, solo. Sweeter Than Sugar was his first record followed by Say You, Little Bit Of Heaven and Right Or Wrong which propelled him towards stardom.
He landed gigs on Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, American Bandstand and finally landed on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1967.
Dove was no ‘flash in the pan’ as he recorded 23 top ten records.

It was directly after his Sullivan gig that I had the pleasure to meet him when he returned to his alma mater, Herndon High School, to perform a benefit concert at the request of his old buddy and classmate, James Ashwell. I was a Junior at the School and affiliated with a Garage Band ( The Changing Tide ) that was selected to perform as one of 3 local warm up Acts.
My meeting with Dove was brief but that night is one in which I’ll never forget albeit had nothing to do with him but of peripheral events.

First, the 3 local Bands were (1) the hugely popular Cavemen which employed one of my Classmates, Steve Croson on Bass Guitar along with another older Schoolmate, Johnny Smith on the Keyboards.

I would like to take a paragraph to say a few words about Steve Croson, at this point. I met Steve for the first time when he transferred to Herndon Intermediate School when he and I were in the 7th Grade.
Steve was tall – I was short .. and that separated us to a small degree at the beginning of that School year. But I came to like and respect Steve although I was much too immature to verbalize it, at the time.
We shared a Music Class, together taught by a high strung, young (hot) teacher by the name of Miss Hickman. I wanted her attention but was unable to attain it because I was an immature 13 year old although my hormones rivaled that of any Senior’s at the School.
Steve, on the other hand was cool and clam and he had something that I didn’t – talent.
At one point, early in the School year, Steve propositioned Miss Hickman into allowing him to sing a song, solo, in front of the Class .. for extra credit. She acquiesced and Steve went to the front of the old Classroom and belted out a number. Miss Hickman was very pleased and this pissed me off because I wanted her to be pleased with me .. which she never was.
Steve Snyder and I sat in the back of the Class and made fun of Steve Croson during his entire performance. He never let it affect him and he completed his song as professionally as any nightclub singer.
He impressed me that day and he never once said anything degrading towards me for my actions and I have respected him ever since.

But, I digress; another local Band to appear as a warm up Act was (2) the Discotheques. Members of that Group were Gary Hornbaker, Ricky Burton (Class of ’68), Temple Chapple and Goose Goslin.
And the last musical assemblage was (3) The Changing Tide. This was the Band that I was Managing (read: Equipment Mover & Friend) and had Roger Boyd on Rhythm Guitar and Lead Vocals, Ronnie Powers (Class of ’68) on Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals, Cleve Wehle on Keyboards and Backing Vocals, Tim Slepetz (Class of ’68) on Bass Guitar and Backing Vocals and Mike (Marshall) Thompson (Class of ’68) on the Ludwig Drum Kit.

There was no arguing that the Cavemen were the class act of the amateur warm up Groups and would play 3rd .. just before Ronnie Dove. But it was thought that the older and more established Discotheques would perform 2nd and the upstart Changing Tide would open the card.
On the day of the Show – Mr. Ashwell who was Producing the event, came up to me and informed me that The Changing Tide would play 2nd on the card. He told Ricky Burton, in my presence, that his Band would open the Show.
The schedule was to be that the first Group played 3 songs, the second Group would play 4 songs and the Cavemen would play 6 songs.
Ronnie Dove would sing as many as he wanted.

On that day of the Show, the Discotheques leader, Goose Goslin was not happy with his Band playing before The Changing Tide and he devised a plan to upset the schedule. He would not show up at the Show’s start time. His plan was to arrive during The Changing Tide’s second number and Ricky Burton would tell Mr. Ashwell .. and the first 2 Acts play times would be reversed.
Just before we (The Changing Tide) went onstage, Mr. Ashwell informed me that we should increase our playlist to 5 songs because the Discotheques’ Leader was a no show. So I told Roger and Mike and the Show began.

Sure enough, just as The Changing Tide broke into their 2nd song, Goose Goslin appeared backstage and just as planned, Ricky told Mr. Ashwell and Mr. Ashwell told me to go out from the wings where I was stationed and tell Roger to kill it after 3 songs.
So, as soon as that song ended, I walked onstage and pretended to adjust Roger’s microphone and whispered into his ear that Goose had shown up and Ashwell wanted us off after 3 songs. I could see the look in Roger’s eyes that wasn’t what he was going to do.
When I returned to my post, Mr. Ashwell asked me if everything was okay and I just gave him a blank look.
As the Discotheques prepared to take the stage after our 3rd song – Roger went directly into our 4th song. Obviously, Mr. Ashwell wasn’t happy and told Ricky that we’d, still, be doing 4 songs and although they’d go 2nd – they get only 3 songs. Then, I was given strict orders by Mr. Ashwell to go out and cut Roger off after that 4th song.
I went out and told Roger and he said, “Fuck Ashwell !”
I went back to the wings and Mr. Ashwell asked if they were coming offstage but Roger kicked into the 5th song. Mr. Ashwell asked me what Roger said and I told him that Roger said, “Fuck Ashwell !”
Mr. Ashwell’s eyes grew quite large and he told me that he’d cut them off after that next song, himself but Roger finished the 5th song and went directly into song # 6 with no break. After song # 6, Mr. Ashwell hurried onstage and told Roger to cut it off right there. Then, as he was walking back to the wings, I heard Roger introduce Ronnie Powers who was going to sing a song that he and I co-wrote together called You Lied.
And as Ronnie began singing what was the 7th song, I noticed a weary smile slid across Mr. Ashwell’s face. I asked him what Roger said and Mr. Ashwell (who was practically laughing, now) said that Roger said, FUCK you !”

So, Mr. Ashwell had no choice but to tell Ricky and Goose that they would not be performing that night. Goose was mad and trashed the backstage area and left with his Guitar .. but left his Amplifier at the stage door. Ricky and Gary and Temple left, also, fairly quickly.
And as Mr. Ashwell and I stood there watching The Changing Tide finish their set with their 7th and final song – Roger just couldn’t let it go. As Ronnie was singing the front line which was ‘Baby You Lied’ .. Roger was supposed to back the drawn out word Lied with You Lied To Me .. but instead he sang quite loudly, Mr. Ashwell Lied .. To Me.
I, still, remember Mr. Ashwell remarking, “that Goddamned Boyd has some nerve !”

So, after the Set, I overheard Johnny Smith tell Mr. Ashwell that the Cavemen had to sing a 7th song because it wouldn’t be right for the headline amateur band to sing 6 songs while the cold opening group sang 7.
So, Steve – that’s why you guys added a 7th song to your repertoire, that night.

Oh and finally, as we members of The Changing Tide were leaving the venue, that night and packing up our Equipment .. we stumbled across the Amp that Goose left there.
We discussed the dirty trick that Goose tried to pull to plunk us from our position in the schedule of Acts. We determined that he needed to be penalized for that .. and so we took his Amp and removed the Speakers and threw the remaining cabinet in Lake Anne in Reston.

Epilogue

Now, to follow up this Review – I’ll add that in the 1980’s I rekindled my friendship with Johnny Smith and we discussed that night. I informed him that the Cavemen’s choice of performing the Everly Brothers hit All I Have To Do Is Dream was a genius move being that there were many older person’s at the Show to see Ronnie Dove. Of course Johnny took full credit for the choice.
I told Johnny about Goose’s dirty trick and what we did with his Amp.
Johnny who is quite the crazy admitted that was a cool thing to do.

Also, during the 1980's, I became friends with Goose Goslin and although we discussed that night .. I never told him about the Amp.
Then, one night at a common friend’s house (Cliff Leith) in Sugarland Run, as it turned out, I was there and so was Johnny and so was Goose.
Somehow that Ronnie Dove Show came up and Johnny Smith let it slip that we (I) stole Goose’s Amp.
And even though 15-20 years had passed, Goose, who was quite wild and ornery wanted to kick my ass. He stayed mad at me for months. Finally, he pretended to not be angry at me anymore .. but I know he was, still, hurt.
Goose passed away a few years ago .. and I think he was, still, mad at me, at that time.
I’m sorry for that.
Goose – if you’re up there and you can hear me .. I’m sorry.

It's Only Make Believe

written by: Jack Nance & Conway Twitty
most popular version recorded by: Conway

It’s Only Make Believe

Prologue
People see us everywhere
They all think you really care
But myself I can't deceive
I know it's only make believe

1
My one and only prayer
Is that some day you'll care
My hopes my dreams come true
My one and only you
No one will ever know
How much I love you so

Hook
My only prayer will be
Some day you'll care for me
But it's only make believe

2
My hopes my dreams come true
My life I give for you
My heart or wedding ring
My all my everything
My heart I can't control
You lure my very soul

Hook (repeats)
My only prayer will be
Some day you'll care for me
But it's only make believe

3 (verse 1 repeats)
My one and only prayer
Is that some day you'll care
My hopes my dreams come true
My one and only you
No one will ever know
How much I love you so

Hook (changes)
My prayers my hopes my schemes
You are my every dream
But it's only make believe

* Writers Note:
It's Only Make Believe is the name of a song written by Jack Nance and Conway Twitty. Twitty released it as a single in 1958. The single performed well, topping both U.S. and British charts, and to date it remains Twitty's only number one single on the Pop charts.
The song's lyrics describe the thoughts and feelings of a man in love with a woman who does not seem to be in love with him. He hopes and prays that, at some point in time, the woman will be able to return his love, but laments that, at present, ‘it's only make believe’.
The co-author of the song, Jack Nance, is not the same person as John Marvin Nance, an actor whom is also known as Jack Nance. The co-author was a drummer, trumpet player and singer, who worked with Conway in Arkansas as a teenager. Later in his career, Jack toured with Germain Jackson. --> :shocking:

5500 Years From Home

In addition to the 250 plus Lyrical Pieces that I have written and received Copyright Protection from the Library Of Congress - I have, also, written a Novel (copyrighted but not Published) entitled 5500 Years From Home. I am currently working on a 2nd Book entitled The Island that I am about 1/2 the way towards completion, at this date.
I have decided to, occasionally, post excerpts from 5500 Years From Home in this Blog space.
Today, we peruse the 1st page of Chapter 4 – Page 23.

Enjoy !

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter Four ... page 23

Silent Encounter

As the craft’s soft faint glow became a little brighter, Thom, Charles and Audrey decided to retreat a few yards back from where they stood. Suddenly, a calming voice was heard to say not to worry and that they would not be harmed. The three of them looked at each other and Charles asked if the others had heard it. Thom said he had heard it .. but asked where it had come from ? Audrey assured them that she had not said anything. Strangely though, all three felt an easiness come over them. They soon began to understand what was happening and yet, they were not afraid. The craft was emitting not only silent words but an aura of peacefulness. It was becoming apparent that this was not a weather apparatus nor was it a communication satellite. It was an Orb that housed a Being. And the Being was injured and in need of help. Thom, Charles and Audrey all felt as if they were in a state of suspended animation. Yet, they were lucid and quite awake. And all felt a warm, fuzzy easiness and one of a great understanding.

Immediately, Audrey was silently informed to go back to her house and be with her mother and children. And she understood that she should not tell anyone of what was occurring out here. Audrey looked at her husband and father and nodded and began to walk back to her house. It was at that time that an opening had slowly appeared on the Orb’s side. Charles was silently summoned to come to the opening. The silent voice seemed to be heard in the minds of Thom and Charles as it had with Audrey. The Orb’s inhabitant was requesting that the Doctor enter the Orb’s opening. Charles started to speak but quickly understood that he didn’t have to. He needed only to think his words and so he thought as if speaking that he was not a Doctor, only a retired Veterinarian. He sensed that the Orb’s inhabitant was saying that was okay. And so, with Thom behind him, Charles stepped up over the rim under the opening and into the Orb.

… all felt a warm, fuzzy easiness ..

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned

Editor’s Note:
I feel it necessary to explain this one right up front.
I don’t want to pizz off Donna  .. or those others of you who are kind enough to peruse my Blog .. which btw, thanks.
I have, obviously angered some in the past with this offering.
Here’s the scoop: I was chatting with a lady friend of mine (back in 1989) and she remarked that she wished that I had not told her about some minor occurance that had transpired. I asked her, half jokingly, if she wanted me to lie to her. She replied in a serious tone that yes, I should have lied. Then, she added, “don’t you know when to lie to a woman ?”
And it hit me – I didn’t know when to lie.
And so, as a joke ( a joke ! ), I decided to write a spoof song. One that Jimmy Buffett or Pat Dailey could sing at about Midnight after many beers were consumed. Many !
Remember IT’S A JOKE ! A joke !
Okay ?
A joke. A spoof. A lampoon.
A mockery. Tomfoolery. A parody.

hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

1
don’t make a mistake
and tell a woman the truth
they say that’s all they want
but if you do you’ll lose

so take my advise
if you want to be cool as ice
consider yourself forewarned .. cause
hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

chorus
no hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
no one knows that better than me
i seem to do it frequently

i know all the ground rules
still i’m alone and blue
cause i told a woman the truth

2
if you’ve made a mistake
tell a woman a lie
they’ll believe it every time
i don’t know why

to avoid the dog house
be meek as a mouse
cause just as sure as you were born
hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

repeat chorus

3
i was a bad boy
when i was seventeen
told all the girls i loved them
it didn’t seem so mean

i loved all i could
i just thought i should
but when i tooted my own horn
i found out hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

Methinks the Gods of Fantasy Football have caught up with me.
I’ll preface my modest remarks, this week, by stating for my Readers that in years past in this League, I have won one Championship game .. made it to but lost another and on two other occassions my Playoff run stopped one play short of said Championship games.
Now that the bragging is past tense – I will humbly admit that my 2008 entry will not be as pleasant.
I have lost my first 2 games for the first time ever .. and the future does not look any brighter in the coming weeks.
Why? Well, it seems I have Drafted poorly .. and some good Players are not performing up to their standards .. and a few minor injuries are compounding my hopes.
Enough said.

Dear Blog

Monday September 15, 2008

Dear Blog

I have no update on Key West’s Reston Ghost .. but I am snooping around and will keep you informed as to my findings.

The Redskins won the 2nd game of the season over the New Orleans Saints at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, their Home Stadium .. evening their record at 1 - 1.
Trailing 10-9 at Halftime .. and 17-9 just 5 minutes into the 3rd quarter .. and 24-15 to start the 4th quarter, the Redskins turned a sloppy, error filled game into a thrilling come from behind victory with Clinton Portis running in an 8 yard TD (his second of the game) with less than 6 minutes remaining and 2 minutes later Santana Moss hauling in a 67 yard TD pass from QB Jason Campbell.
Campbell who has not looked sharp in the last 3 games rebounded with a career (stat-wise) game by completing 24 of 36 passes for 321 yards and the aforementioned TD .. but maybe most importantly NO INTERCEPTIONS !
Portis ran for 96 yards on 21 hard earned carries.
Rookie Safety Chris Horton, filling in for a sickened Reed Doughty intercepted Saints QB Drew Brees TWICE and also, recovered a fumble.
Methinks he has earned a starting job.
Moss scored his TD on 7 receptions for 164 yards.
Chris Cooley, also, came alive with 5 catches for 72 yards.
Funny - Jim Zorn’s vaunted West Coast Offense has not proven as successful as the base Offense that was utilized in the latter parts of these first 2 games when the Redskins have moved the ball more easily.

The Redskins next game is at their home Fed-Ex Field, Sunday, September 21 at 1 PM verses the Arizona Cardinals.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, we can view it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … :crickets:
Enough said.

Greg Biffle won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Sylvania 300 sponsored by GoDaddy.com at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. Jimmie Johnson finished 2nd and Carl Edwards finished 3rd.
The Race was the 1st of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 8th, 9th and 34th respectively.
These 3 Driver’s are currently ranked 7th, 6th and 8th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Dover 400 NSCS sponsored by the Principal Financial Group at the Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware on Sunday, September 21 at 2 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal saw Dr. Charles Eastin of the Sterling Park Animal Hospital this past week and continues with her Rimadyl medication and continues to enjoy quality of life.

Thank God, Ike has missed us here in Florida .. but my heart goes out to the Texas Coast for having to deal with the disastrous Hurricane.
But we must beware .. Josephine is coming.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 86 degrees with a overnight low of 79 degrees.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 83 degrees and with an overnight low of 52 degrees.

Okay, thanks for dropping by this Blog, today.
I hope to see you, tomorrow, for amateur Lyricist day ..
and, also, the FU League’s Final weekly Scores & Standings
at this URL.

My time is, now, up .. I thank you for yours.

1st & 2nd Days Of Fourth Grade

Thursday September 12, 2008
***************************

1st & 2nd Days of Fourth Grade
Mrs. Pearson’s Class

I remember it well. 1959 .. just 49 years ago.

My Family had just completed our all-day visit to Glen Echo Amusement Park in Cabin John, Maryland.
My Mother worked for the Marriott Corporation’s Hot Shoppe Restaurant. Every year, during the last week of Summer – Hot Shoppe allowed their Employees and their whole Families to ride any and all of the Rides .. as much as they wanted. And we all ate a fabulous meal with Soft Drinks and Dessert. And we swam in the Crystal Pool as much as we wanted to.
Usually, these trips took place on a week-end .. but this year – it was done on Memorial Day, Monday. And School started the very next day.

Mrs. Pearson’s Fourth Grade Classroom was in the old, smaller building at the full School’s Complex on Locust Street in Herndon, Virginia. The room was on the main level – front, right hand side of the building.

Mrs. Pearson knew me because I had two Sisters who went through her Fourth Grade Classes, just a few years prior to this one. I never really knew much about Mrs. Pearson’s personal life but there must have been some sort of problem because she always smelled like cheap perfume and poop. Seriously ! Sh!t & Avon. Seriously !

Regardless, Mrs. Pearson was meticulous in her preperation and thorough in her written assignments. Every day was to be started with the 7 Morning Messages. They were; 1) Daily Bible Reading, 2) Lord’s Prayer, 3) Pledge of Alligence / Flag Salute, 4) Thought For The Day, 5) Sharing (where anybody could share any item or message), 6) Lunch Menu (for that day), and finally 7) a Morning Song (that the whole class would sing).
There would be 7 different children handling these chores for a full week at a time. The next week, each child would slid down a notch to the next chore .. and a new child was added at the top where the Bible Reading was.

On this Tuesday, first day of School – Mrs. Pearson chose the 7 kids and doled out their respective Morning Jobs. I was at the top of the list. Daily Bible Reading.
I was given a Bible and a few minutes to choose my verse (which was the 23rd Psalm, obviously).

On the next day of School, when I got into the Classroom, that morning – Mrs. Pearson took me and Connie Butler aside and explained to me that Connie’s Father was a Christian Preacher .. and Connie requested that SHE be given the Daily Bible Reading chore. Therefore, I’d be moved down to the Pledge of Alligeance because a member of Connie’s Church (Suzy) wanted the Lord’s Prayer. Gary Vernon would slid down 2 spots. Sammy Young would lose his Morning Song slot and fall off the panel, altogether. It didn’t matter because he wasn’t there, that morning, anyway .. as would Bobby Drummund lose his spot - who had the Sharing gig .. and he liked it. He was good at it.

And so it was. The Pledge of Alligeance was going to be tricky because I’d never seen it in print .. and only mouthed the words, the day before .. because I was coming down off having to have read from the Bible .. aloud. By. Myself !
Let’s see ..there’s ..
”Everybody, please stand blah blah blah –
I pledge allegiance to the Flag .. United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands… gee, now what ? Oh, one Nation under God, indivisible, (maybe that’s indivisable .. invisible .. inadmissible) With Liberty and Justice for all. ”
Wow, is that right ? I think most of it.

Twenty minutes later, as School began and the 7 Morning Messengers were assembling – Mrs. Pearson grabbed my arm and told me I’d be switched to the Lord’s Prayer because Connie’s Churchmate was too scarred to say the Lord’s Prayer in front of the Class.

Now, Connie’s Daily Bible Reading was short and sweet. Barely gave me time to realize that I wasn’t sure of the words in the Lord’s Prayer. Let’s see there’s:
“Our Father who art in Heaven – Hallowed, hollowed, holy be his name .. uh, uh, thy kingdom come .. my king .. thy will be done …
Right about then, it was my turn. I froze a little .. and wanted to buy time so I said,
“ now you all go on and bow your heads, now everybody .. you too, Connie and Suzy”..
and away I went.
“Our Father who art in Heaven – Hallowed be thy name – Thy kingdom come – Thy will be done – On Earth as it is in Heaven”
And there I was .. right to where I practiced .. and I was lost .. couldn’t go further ..
until these words just smoothly rolled on out,
“and to the Republic for which it stands”
Now, confusion enters the Room. Several children began to stand, hearing the Flag Salute. Then, I roll out,
“Give us our day this daily bread”
Now kids are bowing their heads again, and this faux pas may pass, quietly. But, no – I continue, “One nation under God, indi .. indi .. individual – Liberty Valance ..”

Now, there’s kids laughing at the individual misspeak. And Liberty Valance. There’s many others that are standing. And Connie Buler is motioning to Mrs. Pearson, who still was in semi bowed head Prayer mode. That was it.

Mrs. Pearson walked briskly over to my face and grabbed me by my hair and shook me. Hard ! And then yells in my ear that she knew she couldn’t trust me to be serious.

There it was ! The first big student screw up of the year. I was embarrassed in front of the whole Class .. and it was going to last, all year. All year.

** Looking back on this incident in my Life’s Adventures .. I’m visably moved to tell you, in all seriousness, ..
I should have dropped that b!tch right there, when she grabbed my hair and pulled it.

:howardcosell:
Down goes Mrs. Pearson ! Down goes Mrs. Pearson ! Down goes Mrs. Pearson !
:howardcosell:

Friday; September 11, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Singer, Songwriter & Fiddler
ALISON KRAUSS
Best (Female) Artist

I’m sure you’ve heard, by now, that Alison Krauss & Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin lead singer) are Touring, together in 2008.
Well, although that may very well be true – the Led Zeppelin Reunion Tour has caused rescheduling.

Yes, Alison & Robert headlined Bonnaroo 2008 Music & Arts Festival. They joined Pearl Jam, Metallica, Jack Johnson, Kanye West, Phil Lesh & Friends, My Morning Jacket, The Allman Brothers Band, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Sigur Ros, Levon Helm, The Bluegrass Allstarts Featuring: Luke Bulls, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer and Bryan Sutton, Younder Mountain String Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Pat Green, Solomon Burke, and many, many more, more.

Yet, Alison Krauss & her band, Union Station toured the Globe that began February 28, 2008 in New York city’s Carnegie Hall and played dates in Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Louisiana before crossing the ‘big pond’ appearing in the UK, Germany, France, Belgium and Sweden before coming back Stateside finishing off the Tour in mid June.

If you would like to hear Alison Krauss at her finest, click on this youtube.com selection of her covering James Taylor’s Carolina In My Mind:

Carolina In My Mind

In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine
Can't you just feel the moonshine
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind

Karen she's a silver sun
You best walk her way and watch it shinin'
Watch her watch the mornin' come
A silver tear appearing now I'm cryin'Ain't I
Goin' to Carolina in my mind

.There ain't no doubt in no one's mind
That love's the finest thing around
Whisper something soft and kind
And hey babe the sky's on fire, I'm dyin'Ain't I
Goin' to Carolina in my mind

.In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine
Can't you just feel the moonshine
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind

.Dark and silent late last night
I think I might have heard the highway calling
Geese in flight and dogs that bite
Signs that might be omens say I'm going, going
I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind

.With a holy host of others standing 'round me
Still I'm on the dark side of the moon
And it seems like it goes on like this forever
You must forgive me
If I'm up and goin' to Carolina in my mind

.In my mind I'm goin' to Carolina
Can't you see the sunshine
Can't you just feel the moonshine
Ain't it just like a friend of mine
To hit me from behind
Yes I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind

.Goin' to Carolina in my mind
And I'm goin' to Carolina in my mind
Goin' to Carolina in my mind

.
(Goin')(I'm goin')
(Say nice things about me 'cause I'm goin' southbound)
(Carry on with out me 'cause I'm goin')

Truly, if there’s ever been anybody to topple Patsy Cline from the Greatest Female Artist spot – in my mind, I’m going to Alison Krauss.
