MurderBall

Friday October 10, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

more exciting news from my 7th Grade School year
MurderBall
My favorite Gym Class game of All-time.

7th Grade was the dividing line for Students’ lives in Herndon during the early 1960s. The 6th Grade was normal; you rode the School Bus to School and you got there at 8:15 AM with Classes beginning at 8:30. You sat in the same desk all day in the same Classroom with the same Teacher. The only exceptions were that you took a 10 minute ‘midmorning break’ for a small snack and bathroom use at 10:15, you went to the Cafeteria for Lunch at Noon for 30 minutes and at 2 PM, you went outside for Recess for about 40 minutes. Then at 3:30, the School day ended and you rode the School Bus home.

But, in the 7th Grade, everything changed. 7th and 8th Grade was now called Intermediate School with High School being 9th – 12th Grades. School started 15 minutes earlier and ended 15 minutes later but the major changes were in between those times. When you first arrived at School, you went to your Homeroom where you stayed 15 minutes listening to the Morning Announcements that were broadcast through a speaker on the wall by the door. Then, you went to another Classroom and every 50 minutes a bell would ring and you’d go to your Locker and exchange your book for another and report to a different Classroom. Your Locker had a combination lock on it which you had to memorize the numbers to and in what order to spin the dial.

There were some radically different Subjects, as well. Shop was a Class where there were power tools and other dangerous equipment that could cut off a finger or cause you to bleed in many other ways. There was no more Arithmetic – that Class was now called Math and every other day, you had either Art or Music Class.

But THE most radically different Subject was the life changing Gym Class. It wasn’t called Recess anymore .. it was called Physical Education and shortened to Phys-Ed. Oh sure, it was fun but you had go into a dingy, stinkin’ Locker room and take off your School clothes and put on Shorts, T-shirts, Sneakers and something called a Jockstrap. There was another combination lock and another set of numbers to memorize. And before you could go outside to play Sports, you had to do exercises. Stretching muscles that you didn’t even know that you had. And when your play-time activity was complete, you had to go back into that dingy, stinkin’ Locker room and take off your sweaty Gym attire and take a freaking shower. Right there in School. Then, you’d dry off and put your School clothes back on and go to another Class as if nothing happened out of the ordinary. :- o

The first three months of School found my Gym Class going outside to play, but playing got a little harder. We had to run around a Track (with no ball or game involved) and we had to jump high and far and land in sawdust. We even had to do push ups and pull ups and sit ups.

Then, by the time cold weather arrived, we took Gym Class inside in the School’s one and only Gymnasium. And since we had an enrollment of more than 700 in the Intermediate & High School, which were all at the same place and same time, we shared our Gym Class time with the 11th Graders.

Inside, we still had to do exercises and sit ups, etc. but we, also, got to play actual games like Basketball and Volleyball and a new type of Dodge ball game called MurderBall. During the first week that my Class played this game, we were alone in the Boy’s half of the Gym because the 11th Graders were doing a different activity, outside. The game of MurderBall was, indeed, Dodge ball with a few exceptions. The area of play had one side verses the opposite side. The boundaries were marked off in thirds. Each side’s back third was their zone and the other team could not enter into it .. but the middle third was designated as Dead Man’s Land and both teams could, legally, enter that area. The rest was Dodge ball played with 4 of those red rubber inflated balls the approximate size of somewhere between a Basketball and a Volleyball.
If you hit someone with a ball, they were out and had to vacate the area BUT if they caught a ball that you threw in the air, the thrower was out of the contest.

Some people would play the game timidly, by hiding in the back third and not making any attempt to gather up a thrown ball and throw it back at someone. We could play as many as 3-5 games per each Gym Class and I’ll admit that I played the game aggressively. I enjoyed knocking unsuspecting Classmates out of the game and, sure, I was knocked out other times, as well.

During the Friday Gym Class, the 11th Graders finished up their outside Class activity before the period was over and they came inside the Gymnasium. And so it was, the last MurderBall game of the day and of the week was a contest between the 11th Graders and the 7th Graders.

* Allow me to interject one important note, here, if I may. One of the 11th Graders was a guy by the name of Bill Butler. I played Little League Baseball with Bill when I was 8 years old and he was 12. I wasn’t old enough to play but I lied about my age. Bill went on to pitch in the Major Leagues with Cleveland and Kansas City. He once threw a 9 inning 1-hit shutout with 11 Strikeouts.
But I digress ..

There were maybe as many as 25 of us 7th Graders while the 11th Grade Class had 12 guys at the most because it wasn’t a credited Class after 10th Grade. As the game wore on, I carefully avoided Bill Butler when he got a ball and I watched him nail unsuspecting 7th Graders. He put a big red mark on many of my Classmates’ legs and arms. When the clock on the wall showed no time left in the Class activity and it was time to go shower up, the Gym Teacher, Mr. Griffiths proclaimed that that the game would conclude before we had to retreat to the showers. If we were late for our next class, he’d write us a note.
And so, the game was down to me as the last 7th Grader and Bill Butler and Billy Roberts as the last 11th Graders and all 4 balls were on their side of the Court. Ronnie Roberts was a tricky s.o.b. and he and Bill, both, had a ball in their hands. Ronnie whispered something into Bill’s ear and they laughed. Then, Ronnie ran towards me and wound up to sling a ball at me when he (supposedly) tripped and his throw lazily popped up into the air right to me. As I stepped forward in the middle of the Court to make an easy routine catch and eliminate him from the game, I looked up at the ball in the air and while I was starring upwards, Bill hauled off (I love that expression) and hit me square in the side of my head with a sizzling fastball. I never saw it coming. It knocked me back about 10 feet before I could, finally, hit the floor and as I did, I rolled and tumbled another 10 feet or so. I could have laid right there but I decided to accentuate the moment by rolling backwards and tumbling another 20 feet or so until I got the double doors that led out into the School hallway. Jokingly, a Classmate of mine opened the doors and I tumbled right out into the hallway and with a red splotch on the side of my face the size of a watermelon, laid on my back with my arms and legs sprawled out.

The joke could have ended right there but it so happened that a group of Sophomore girls who had finished their Lunch in the nearby Cafeteria and had moseyed on down the hall in front of their next Class, waiting for the bell to ring and enter, were standing all around the place that I tumbled out to. They ran over to me asking, “is that little guy all right’? I looked up with a dazed look and there stood about 10 girls, one of which was Virginia Emery. She of the brown Volkswagen that drove past my morning School bus stop, every morning and whom I had a huge crush on. Another girl asked if I needed anything and I half unconsciously replied that I needed that girl (pointing towards Virginia Emery) to kiss my boo boo. Virginia Emery did kiss the side of my head but then the bell rang and all the girls scurried off and into the Drama Class located right across from the Gym.

As I started to get up, most of my Class was looking at me and Bill Butler and Billy Roberts picked me up and escorted me back towards the dingy, stinkin’ Locker room and I became a Cult hero not only with my Classmates but with the 11th Graders and most importantly, with those Sophomore girls and Virginia Emery.

* Note: More on another, later, encounter with Virginia Emery in another Blog Piece, someday soon. I promise.

When I die and they lay me to rest

Gonna go to the place that's the best

When I lay me down to die

Goin' up to the spirit in the sky

Goin' up to the spirit in the sky

That's where I'm gonna go when I die

When I die and they lay me to rest

Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself; you know it's a must

Gotta have a friend in Jesus

So you know that when you die

He's gonna recommend youTo the spirit in the sky

Never been a sinner I never sinned

I got a friend in Jesus

So you know that when I die

He's gonna set me up withThe spirit in the sky

* I’ve always wondered why a person named Greenbaum would be singing the praises of Jesus …

Norman Greenbaum had previously been a member of psychedelic jug band Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band. When they split up he won a solo contract with producer Erik Jacobsen, who had previously worked successfully with The Lovin' Spoonful. He was inspired to write the song after watching Porter Wagoner on TV singing a gospel song. Greenbaum later said : "I thought, 'Yeah, I could do that,' knowing nothing about gospel music, so I sat down and wrote my own gospel song. It came easy. I wrote the words in 15 minutes.”
"Spirit in the Sky" contains lyrics about the afterlife, making several references to Jesus. However, Greenbaum, who identifies himself as Jewish, stated that he had no particular religious intentions with the song. He simply wanted to reach a bigger market. In fact, the line "Never been a sinner, I never sinned" runs counter to the Christian concept of sin. (Though, it is consistent with some interpretations of the Doctrine of Justification) The song's guitar riff was inspired by John Lee Hooker's influential "Boogie Chillen."
Greenbaum recorded his first solo album with Jacobsen for ‘Reprise Records’. The song's arrangement came together in the studio in San Francisco where Lead Guitarist Russell DaShiell, Bass Player, Doug Killmer and Drummer Norman Mayall worked with Greenbaum. Greenbaum himself used a Fender Telecaster with a Fuzz Box built into the body to generate the song's characteristic guitar sound.

* Now I know. He simply wanted to reach a larger audience. J

Silent Encounter

After dinner, Audrey and Janice cleaned up the Kitchen while the children returned to the Family Room where they played and watched a Disney Christmas Songs CD. Charles and Thom meandered around behind the house with the idea of checking on the pony and the EOB.
The original thought was to have Cyndi come down to the barn on Christmas morning but the men would have to be sure that was an achievable plan with the EOB there. After a short period of time, they were back down at the barn. When Thom entered the structure he found the pony doing quite well and had eaten the grassy hay that was put in his stall. There was no reason to go into the attic to check on the EOB and his Orb. Both men were telepathically assured that it was doing fine, recuperating in peace. The EOB, also, assured them that Cyndi would surely be able to come down to the barn on Christmas morning to see the new pony that was her main Christmas present. With everything seemingly going well, the men returned to the house. At that time, the entire family retired to the Family Room where they sang Christmas Songs.

By the time that midnight had rolled around, the kids had gone to bed and Thom had brought the Space Rocket bicycle into the Family Room and placed it beside the Christmas Tree. With everything taken care of, the adults retired to bed, as well. It wasn’t easy for any of them to fall asleep, quickly. Audrey questioned Thom about the EOB. Was it from Mars or another Planet or even outside our Solar System ? Had anything like this ever happened before and was covered up by our Government ? Or were other World leaders involved in a similar conspiracy ? Thom had no answers but many other questions haunted him, as well.

Janice and Charles were having similar concerns. Charles explained to his wife about performing the medical procedure without his instruments and how time passed in different planes.

… where they sang Christmas songs ..

i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

hook

i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore
you can rake it in a pile
you can sweep it out the door
you gotta give me proof
if you wanna know the score
and i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

verse 1

i listened carefully
when i was very young
to all those stories
about the things to come
i’ll admit now
it seemed so surreal
but i believed my elders
when they laid out the deal
i gotta tell you all
now that it’s become lore
i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

hook

now i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore
you can rake it in a pile
you can sweep it out the door
you gotta give me proof
if you wanna know the score
and i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

verse 2

as i grew up
my questions began to flow
but they hammered me down
saying it’s the only way to go
taking all the good
but none of the blame
was the answer to it all
but puzzling just the same
you could fool me then
by promising me the store
but i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

hook

no i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore
you can rake it in a pile
you can sweep it out the door
you gotta give me proof
if you wanna know the score
and i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

verse 3

now that i’m grown
i make up my own mind
i decipher the code
i’m no longer blind
it seems so silly
that many willingly follow
if you feed ‘em salvation
they’ll happily swallow
times have changed
and i’ll tell you what for
i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

hook

oh i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore
you can rake it in a pile
you can sweep it out the door
you gotta give me proof
if you wanna know the score
and i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,
anymore

well i just can’t buy that bullsh!t,

you can rake it in a pile
you can sweep it out the door
you gotta give me proof
if you wanna know the score

Dear Blog

Monday October 6, 2008

Dear Blog

Two page 1 items this past week:
Above the fold; the Veep Debate.
I got exactly what I imagined that I would get.
Governor Palin spoke each of her allotted times by reciting directly off her ‘stump speeches’ written by Bush’s speechwriters. And although she did give coherent albeit the ‘conservative line’ answers to several questions, there were several others that she did not answer, at all. Didn’t even try. Just went back and repeated previous answers that she had given to earlier querys.
Senator Biden gave complete and logical, knowledgeable answers to every item mentioned. He did not talk down to Palin nor did he get into a ‘cat fight’ with her. He was , indeed, the elder, more established and obviously smarter person AND Debater.
And that was that Debate.
Winner: Obviously Biden ! 27-4

Below the fold; Herndon High Scholl Class of ’68 ‘get together’.
This event took place at O’Faolain’s Irish Pub in Sterling.
This writer had not attended the previous HHS events and I was looking forward in seeing anyone who attended.
Several Classmates were already there when I arrived. The first person to see me and hug and get kissed by me was Linda Norman. And I was seated next to Linda during Dinner where we both, caught up on many family matters.
The second person to greet me and got kissed was Mary Ellen Duzan – Hawley. Her husband, John introduced himself and he turned out to be every bit of the cool gentelman that I had imagined him to be. Dianna Meredith and I had seen ech other just a few months before but were very grateful to be able to talk, further. Which we did.
Kerry Ragette Rehkamp snuck in a mouth kiss with me which wasn’t difficult / I had planned the same attack with her. Harold Cockerill and Bill Alger and I shook hands and were genuinely happy to be visiting with each other.

We were, soon, taken to our extended set of tables and as we walked there, I cheek kissed Suzy Swain and held her hand. I was trying to find a cute (quick) way of politely telling Suzy that I had a doobie (or two) and wanted to hang out with Kerry and her at her house, after the ‘get together’.
But that didn’t happen. Somehow, Suzy was pried from my clutches and by the time everyone was preparing to split, I had gotten intoxicated and missed my signs.

Let there be no mistake (regardless of my K ..) I had a plum wonderful time. And I think everybody else did as well.
If I am not in Key West, Florida during the next ‘get together’ – I will, most definitely, attend.
And I would suggest that other Classmates consider the neverending invite.

The Washington Redskins.
That’s right the Washington freaking Redskins ..
beat the Philadelphia Iggles, 23 – 17, yesterday in Lincoln Financial Field. That’s right .. the game was played in Philadelphia.
That’s two straight AWAY Wins in the NFC East.
Now, I have had serious doubts about Jason Campbell and you’ve read about it, right here .. by me. But he looks to be a different QB nowadays .. and I don’t mind him proving me to quick to judge.

Campbell completed 16 passes in 29 attempts for 176 yards and no TDs ..
but most importantly NO INTERCEPTIONS .. nor Fumbles !
The Iggles’ QB Donavon McNabb was 17 / 29 – 196 – and no Turnovers.
Clinton Portis ran 29 times for 145 yards and a TD ; he did not Fumble.
First round Fantasy Draft Pick, RB Brian Westbrook tallied 33 yards on 12 carries for the Iggles. That’s under a hundred yards to 2 of the best RBs in Pro Football COMBINED .. in consectutive weeks.

Redskins TE, Chris Cooley hauled in 8 passes for 109 yards and a TD thrown by WR Antwaan Randle El.

Westbrook did manage a Score but was not a factor, .. at all. Basicly basic.

In the best Division in the NFL (the NFC East) ..
The Giants are 4 – 0 with a Bye, this week
while the Redskins and Cowbabies are 4 – 1
and the Iggles are 2 - 3 after this defeat.

Hail to the Redskins for a very sweet ‘W’ .. against the Iggles .. in Philly.

The Redskins next game is at FedEx Field, Sunday, October 12 at 1:00 PM verses the St. Louis Rams.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, it can viewed it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … the Los Angeles Dodgers advanced to the NLCS by defeating the Chicago Cubs in a 3 game Sweep.
The Philadelphia Phillies will join the Dodgers there after beating the Milwaukee Brewers, 3 games to 1. The Winner advancing to the World Series.
In the American League, the Tampa Bay (Devil) Rays have a 2 games to 1 lead over the Chicago White Sox while the Boston Red Sox have a 2 games to 1 led on the Los Angeles Angels.
* Query: Why are the pedestrians in Los Angeles like their Baseball Teams ?
Answer: There are either Dodgers ..or Angels !

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Race, the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, October 5 and televised, nationally, by ABC. It was Stewart’s first win in the last 43 Races .. dating back through last year.
Paul Menard finished 2nd and David Ragan finished 3rd.
The Race was the 4th of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 39th and 15th, respectively. The other JGR member who is slated to replace Tony Stewart, next year ( Joey Lagano ) did not compete.
These 3 top Driver’s are currently ranked 7th, 11th and 12th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Bank of America 500 at the Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, October 11 at 7:25 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal is doing well.
Barked at and chased the cat, recently. :darnedoldcat:

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 70 degrees with a overnight low of 40 degrees.

Little Rascals (Stymie)

Friday October 3, 2008

My favorite character on:
Little Rascals / Our Gang
Matthew (Stymie) Beard

When I was a young child in the late 1950s, one of my favorite TV shows was the Little Rascals. It was, of course, repeats of Movie Shorts created by the late, great Hal Roach (1892-1992) originally called
Our Gang that were made in the 1920s & 1930s.

Back in the day, the main Child Actor star was a portly little fellow by the name of George ‘Spanky’ Mac Farland (1928-1993). Being a White kid – I identified with him. Spanky’s best friend was a slick talking little Black kid named Stymie. Stymie was cool ! As the years went by, I realized that I liked Stymie best. He, always seemed to be on the verge of trouble .. but somehow managed to slick talk his way out of it.

His real name was Matthew Beard, Jr. (1925-1981). In contrast to the character he replaced, Farina - Stymie was a slick-tongued con-artist who was always self-assured, nonchalant, and ready with a sly comment as well as clever ideas to solve the problems he faced. The character's trademark was a bald head crowned by an oversize Derby hat, a gift to Beard from comedian Stan Laurel, who had also worked under Our Gang creator Hal Roach. Stymie is the only Our Ganger to both replace one of the original gang members (Allen "Farina" Hoskins) and be replaced by one that would stay on until the series disbanded (Billie "Buckwheat" Thomas).

The name ‘Stymie’ was provided by Our Gang Director Robert McGowan, who was always frustrated (‘stymied’) by little Matthew's curious wanderings around the studio; the character was originally to be named ‘Hercules’. McGowan would later recall that Stymie was his favorite of all the Our Gang kids. Stymie came to the series a year after the transition from the silent/early talkie era Our Gang. He had the exclusive distinction of being with the gang from the Miss Crabtree / Jackie Cooper / Farina / Chubby / Wheezer / Dorothy / Mary Ann Jackson era through the early Spanky / Dickie Moore / older Wheezer / Sherwood / Dorothy / Breezy / Tommy / Jerry / Scotty period to the more familiar group of Spanky, Alfalfa, and Billie ‘Buckwheat’ Thomas, who would ultimately replace him in 1935.

Stymie's paycheck was used to help support his East Los Angeles family, including his 13 brothers and sisters. After Stymie renamed his younger brother Bobbie ‘Cotton’ (which was also used as Bobbie's Our Gang character name), his parents allowed him to name all of the rest of his siblings as they were born. He named one ‘Dickie’ after his best friend, child actor and Our Ganger Dickie Moore. Four other members of the Beard family would appear in the Our Gang comedies.

After Stymie left the series in 1935 at the age of ten, he went on to score some minor roles in feature films. By the time he was in High School, he had retired from acting. Falling into drug use and street life, Stymie became addicted to Heroin, and spent most of his early adult life in and out of jail because of it. In the 1960s, he checked himself into Synanon, a drug rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles, and successfully ended his Heroin use. After leaving Synanon, he made a small comeback, appearing in small roles in feature films and episodes of television shows such as Sanford and Son where he was ‘Otis Littlejohn’ and Good Times; he had a recurring role as ‘Monty’ on the latter series. He also traveled around the country, giving lectures on drug-abuse awareness. From the mid 1960's until the very early 1980's, Stymie indeed led a vibrant life. His outlook had been very positive.
Stymie Beard appeared to be healthy and celebrated his 56th birthday on New Years day of 1981 with family and friends. But fortunes suddenly changed when he suffered a Stroke a mere two days later. He died several days later of pneumonia on January 8, 1981 in Los Angeles, California. He was 56.

Down In Key West

Thursday October 2, 2008

Written & Performed by:
Pat Dailey

I’m Down In Key West !

I’m down in Key West
I don’t care if you’re pissed
I’m having myself a good time
Laughing and drinking
And not even thinking
Of you azzholes that I left behind
I’d send you a card
But I find it quite hard
To think of a damn thing to say (to you)
‘Cept I’m down in Key West
I hope you all are still pissed
Cause I’m thinking that this time I’ll stay

Songwriter’s Lament

Jimmy Buffett made it big
singing down here in the Keys
But I doubt that I ever will
My hair ain’t that blonde
and my skin ain’t that tanned
Hell, I’ve never even been
to Margaritaville
Now every singer down here in the Keys
Sounds just like Jimmy
And all the girls in the Bars
are wonderin’ where he is
So if you ask me to sing Jimmy Buffett
I’m afraid you’ll just have to stuff it
Cause when Jimmy starts singing my songs
I’ll start singing his
.
It was the same thing when I played
Down in Texas
Sing Willie all the rednecks would yell
But no matter what I would play
I could still hear ‘em say
If you don’t sing Willie
You can just go to Hell
You see every singer in Texas
sounds just like Willie
And all the girls in the Bars
are wonderin’ where he is
If you don’t sing the Redheaded Stranger
In Texas you life is in danger
When Willie starts singing my songs
I’ll start singing his
.
Sh!t, it’s been going on forever
Like in the Rockies
they’d scream for John Denver
In Chicago it was Goodman and Prine
Yes in how many Bars
must I play my guitar
Before they start asking for mine
Cause ever singer in the World
sounds just like someone
But you never know who
until they know who he is
So if it’s Jimmy or Willie you see
won’t you pass this along for me
When they start singing my songs
I’ll start singing theirs
.

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter Four ... page 27

Silent Encounter

Back at the family’s home, Audrey had tried to explain to Janice what was happening down by the barn. It was so incomprehensible that Janice found herself compartmentalizing it and putting her thoughts and efforts towards readying the family for Christmas Eve.
.
There was the Smithfield Ham that she had baked, earlier, that needed to be sliced and readied for the late evening’s meal. And the red potatoes had boiled and were sitting waiting to be mashed and mixed with butter and milk. The lemonade had been put away and milk was the preference of drink for the family. And the loaf of garlic bread was ready to be taken from the oven and cooled.
.
The children were not told anything about the findings because there was no reason to scare them. Besides, what do you say ? No one knew exactly what was occurring anyway.
.
The TV was, still, on but the audio had been muted while the children were examining the presents that lay under the pine Christmas Tree that offered a sweet natural aroma that permeated the entire house.
.
Audrey had changed her clothes and was wearing some jeans that were more comfortable for the evening. Her mind was filled with all things Christmas .. and all things extraterrestrial. It was all that she could do to not sit down and just explode with thoughts and questions. But there were no answers until Thom and Charles returned from the crash site.
.
It was just then that the men entered through the side door at the Kitchen’s edge. While the children continued to play in the Family Room, Charles and Thom met with Janice and Audrey and Charles explained everything that had taken place with the EOB. While all three sat there trying to condense it all, a knock came at the front door. Janice jumped at the sound while the others only looked about. Thom went to see who was there on this Christmas Eve.

… Besides, what do you say ? ..

without a ticket to ride
cognac from the bottle

Editor’s Note:

A few months ago, a friend who was once mine was congratulating me on my lyrical wordsmith abilities and he mentioned that he’d like to pen some lyrics under the title head fakes & handshakes. He added that he was unable to produce anything substantively.
I told him that I’d compose something and let him examine it for his approval .. or disapproval.
Now, it was obvious that this phrase was Sports related .. and so I sat down and began working on it. But I was unable to satisfactorily complete the task.
Instead of giving up – I decided to spoof the phrase .. and write something silly and fun. Even senseless. I mean it’s not like there haven’t been similar works in the past. For instance: Strawberry Alarm Clock’s Incense & Peppermints.

* Here are some ‘diddies’ to look for in this Piece =

My 2nd line --> are lies i define
SAC I&P 2nd line --> Dead kings, many things I can't define.
.
My 4th line --> the strawberry kind. Blatant representation.
.
My 10th line --> maybe you win - maybe you lose
SAC I&P 6th line --> Little to win, but nothing to lose
.
My 14th line --> without a ticket to ride . Beatles song --> Ticket To Ride
.
My 20th & 21st lines --> but you've got to pay your dues if you want to sing the blues are . culled right off Ringo's It Don't Come Easy song, written with George Harrison
.
My 15th & 16th lines --> cognac from the bottle until edgar allen died . First, Cognac is my preferred drink .. and secondly, the edgar allen is borrowed from my 'two old ghosts or dr. seuss meets edgar allen poe' Piece .. or as John Lennon used to say, "I like to steal from meself". :-)
.
My 17th line --> a three legged lunatic
SAC I&P 17th line --> A yardsick for lunatics, one point of view . Plus there's three feet in a yard ..
.
My 19th line --> these are the words you choose
SAC I&P 5th line --> Who cares what games we choose
Plus nerf basketball is a game.
.
My 25th line --> perfumed smoke is the dictionary definition of Incense
.
My 29th line --> cockeyed hippie
SAC I&P 14th line --> Tune-a by the cockeyed world in two
.
My 31st line --> gambling bippy . is stolen from Rowan & Martin's Laugh In .. "You bet your bippy"and he and I used to watch that show, years ago when we were roommates
Finally, .. of course the sha-la-la
.
.
Have fun .. and enjoy this Piece. J

Dear Blog

Monday September 29, 2008

Dear Blog

Just a few simple, quick thoughts on the first Presidential Debate of 2008 held at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on Friday September 26, 2008 from 9 PM until 10:30 PM (one hour and a half).

First, there has been much said and written, already and I will not rehash nor ‘cut & paste’ any of the Pundits ‘talking points’.
My honest humble opinion is that there was no obvious winner. Nor an obvious loser. But I was not satisfied with either Candidate. They, both, were too robotic for me. They spouted out facts & figures and dates as if they were perusing a book (or ‘talking points’ sheet). And that’s the problem. Talk to me .. sincerely. Talk to me. Don’t make it sound as if you’re teaching something to. Just EXPLAIN it to me. In plain, specific words from the Heart .. not from a memory bank.

To add a bit of levity concerning my mistrust of .. well, everybody. I trust nobody .. but at the top of my list is Politicians. They’ll do/say anything to get elected .. and then, they don’t do most of what they say they will.
Obviously, there’s tons o’ money that can be .. proliferated (sic).
That said:
We, still, must choose. Choose who’s best / not who’s perfect.
The levity = I was impressed at McCain’s ability to present so many facts and details and not misspeak .. and to say a lot of things without rambling.
He was better than I’ve ever seen him over what we see and have seen for 8 years.
THEN, it hit me ! I remembered the 3 Presidential Debates of ’04. In the first, Dubya Bush looked like an idot to Kerry’s King.
THEN, they hooked up that earpiece to Bush (remember seeing the coiled wire going up his back, under his Coat)
THEN, in subsequent Debates, Bush repeated what Karl Rove was telling him over that radioized earpiece. And he did his best (yes  HIS best) presentation.
Once I realized how McCain was excelling – in my mind, I began seeing a split screen where someone was reading ‘talking points’ from another room and McCain hearing them and repeating, onstage.

I give Moderator, Jim Lehrer a ‘C’. He tried, at times, and at other times, I thought he slept. I mean – once, when it was time to move on, he not only allowed McCain to counterpoint when it clearly was not his turn nor time .. Lehrer not only allowed McCain to rebut out of turn but gave him 2 minutes.
Whazup wit dat ?

Okay, I did read that McCain was disrepectful and snooty and just like every Religious Conservative I’ve ever witnessed – THOUGHT he was right and Obama wrong ON EVERYTHING !
Obama, on the other hand, was respectful and pointed out where the 2 men agreed and disagreed.
But being a nice guy will lose this Election for the Democrats .. if they are not careful.

Still – too borrr-ing. Like 2 Rock‘em Sock’em Robots .. that didn’t move nor throw punches. But there WAS a red one and a blue one.

The Washington Redskins. Period.
That’s right the Washington freaking Redskins ..
beat the Dallas Crybabies, 26 – 24, yesterday in the two teams’ last ever game in Texas Stadium. That’s right .. the game was played in Dallas.
Now, I have had serious doubts about Redskins QB Jason Campbell and you’ve read about it, right here .. by me. But the Jason Campbell that we’ve seen in the last 3 weeks is not the player that I doubted nor the one who’s played up until the last 3 weeks. I sure hope it continues.
God bless him. I darn sure don’t mind seeing him changing and becoming much better .. causing me to admit judgemental error.

Campbell completed 20 passes in 31 attempts for 231 yards and 2 TDs ..
but most importantly NO INTERCEPTIONS !
Dallas’ Tony Romo was 28 / 47 – 300 – 1 and very importantly, a Pick.
Clinton Portis ran 21 times for 121 yards and although he didn’t score - he did not Fumble.
First round Fantasy Draft Pick, RB Marian Barber tallied 26 yards on 8 carries for the Cowbabies.
Redskins Rookie Safety, Chris Horton intercepted his 3rd pass of the Season .. and is getting meaningful Plays on Defense.

Terrell Owens did manage a Score but was not a factor. Basicly basic.

In the best Division in the NFL (the NFC East) ..
The Giants are 3 – 0 with a Bye, this week
while the Redskins and Cowbabies are 3 – 1
and the Iggles are 2 - 2 after their loose, last night at the Bears.

Hail to the Redskins for the sweetest ‘W’ in the World .. against the Cowbabies .. in Texas.

The Redskins next game is at Lincoln Financial Field, Sunday, October 5 at 1:00 PM verses the Philadelphia Iggles.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, it can viewed it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … :itsover: for the Nationals. Season complete.
There are two rounds of Playoffs And then, a World Series .. and I may have something to say about them as future Dear Blog’s appear at this URL.

Jimmie Johnson won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series Race, the Kansas 400 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Serptember 28 televised by ABC. Carl Edwards finished 2nd and Greg Biffle finished 3rd.
The Race was the 4th of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 40th, 11th and 28th, respectively. The other JGR member who is slated to replace Tony Stewart, next year ( 18 year old Joey Lagano ) finished 39th.
These 3 top Driver’s are currently ranked 11th, 10th and 12th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, October 5 at 2 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal is doing well.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 76 degrees with a overnight low of 52 degrees.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 85 degrees and with an overnight low of 72 degrees.

Only Love Can Break A Heart

Only Love Can Break A Heart

Words by Hal David / Music by Burt Bacharach

( as simple as the lyrics are – sung with emotion,
Gene Pitney sells this song .. )
.
.
.
Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it, again.

.Last night I hurt you
but darlin’ remember this:

.Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again. Mmm, mm.

You know I’m sorry,
I’ll prove it with just one kiss.

.Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

.Give me a chance to make up
for the harm I’ve done.

Try to forgive me
and let’s keep the two of us one.
Please let me hold you
and love you
for always and always

Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

Only love can break a heart,
only love can mend it again.

5500 Years From Home

In addition to the 250 plus Lyrical Pieces that I have written and received Copyright Protection from the Library Of Congress - I have, also, written a Novel (copyrighted but not Published) entitled 5500 Years From Home. I am currently working on a 2nd Book entitled The Island that I am about 1/2 the way towards completion, at this date.
.
I have decided to, occasionally, post excerpts from 5500 Years From Home in this Blog space.
Today, we peruse the 2nd page of Chapter 4 – Page 24.

Silent Encounter

That is where he discovered what would have normally frightened him beyond belief. It was a extrinsic being. Possibly extraterrestrial. Yet, Charles was not afraid nor did he feel a sense of shock. He seemed artificially at ease and knew he had a procedure to perform and was prepared to do so. It was obvious, now, that all communication would be extrasensory.

The Extrinsic Orb Being (EOB) telepathically explained that he was unable to perform the function that his embodiment required to continue to sustain life.

Charles’ precognition thoughts were that he did not have any of his medical instruments before succumbing to the realization that he was not going to require them. He was telepathically instructed to make hand and arm gestures and to perceive a positive influence that would necessitate a health maintenance form of care and recovery. As he accentuated every movement and rumination, he could tell that his handiwork was concluding with a genuine consummation.

It wasn’t until Charles was no longer receiving practitioner’s tutelage that his eyes began to fill with the vision of what this Orb’s inner sanction characteristics were. There were dials and controls on nearly every portion of the inner ship with absolutely no buttons nor switches for calibration. No words, markings nor hieroglyphics adorned any visible area. The scant furnishings were disheveled and the EOB lay on a floor area that was smooth and clean. There was a luminous glow but no lights were conspicuous. Everything appeared to be the same light bluish hue. Charles could feel his body in a weightlessness levity. What was surprising was that he could see quite clearly inside the area although he had not taken the time to put on his eyeglasses. And the tip of the thumb on his right hand that had been severed in a freak occurrence while operating an ailing horse just two years ago was healed and fully responsive. Not even a scar.
.
.
… He was telepathically instructed ..

Dear Blog

Monday September 22, 2008

Dear Blog

Look – I’ve mentioned it before, here in my Blog .. that I am an Independent political voter.
In my past, Nationally, I have voted for Nixon, Reagan and George Herbert Walker Bush. And I have, indeed, voted for McGovern, Carter, Clinton and Kerry.
I did not vote in the Gore / Dubya Bush election. I did not like Dubya from his Savings & Loan scam during his daddy’s presidency .. but I wasn’t buying Gore’s gloom and doom environmental speak. I was wrong about Gore and I, freely, admit it.
My reason was during the 1980’s, the Government told us that R-22 residential coolant (what’s in our home Air Conditioning Units) was destroying the O-Zone. All HVAC Class ‘A’ Contractors would have to buy ‘Reclaim Machines’ to avoid that gas from escaping into our atmosphere. I had to spend $ 3,500 on this machine or lose my License.
After the fact, those Government environmentalists admitted that R-22 wasn’t the cause of thinning O-Zone levels. Still, somebody made a fortune selling those machines.

But, I have digressed.
Today, I want to speak to scare tactics used by the Conservatives. Last election, it was, ‘for God’s sake – get out and vote for Bush .. OR GAYS WILL BE ALLOWED TO MARRY EACH OTHER !
Now, I’m not gay. Never have nor ever will have a homosexual experience.
But gays getting married is not going to harm anything. Sure, I may prefer it to be called a Civil Union .. but it really doesn’t matter. They, surely, deserve legal protection in their partnerships. But it’s not like they are going to become straight if they can’t marry.

Now, this election season, the scare tactic is the mass e-mails claiming that Barack Obama is a radical Muslim. My neighbor showed me one he printed out and told me he wanted to vote Democrat, this time because he was not satisfied with Dubya .. but that he couldn’t vote for a Muslim.
I swear – I wanted to scream. I asked my neighbor if he had checked out the accusation for accuracy and he simply said that the e-mail came from a reliable source. So, we go into his house and Googled Obama’s past. After researching several pertinent websites, my neighbor admitted that Obama was ‘probably’ not a Muslim. He asked me why somebody would send such an e-mail and I could not stop myself from answering, “because ignorant people would believe it !”
I may have saved one idiot vote in 2008 .. but there were over a thousand recipients on that mass e-mail. And each one was asked to send it to their friends.
I, still, want to scream !

Now, onto more positive news.
My Herndon High School’s Class of ’68 is holding another informal get-together. We are meeting for a Dinner Date on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at 7 PM at O’Faolain’s Irish Pub in Sterling, Virginia.
Mary Ellen Duzan-Hawley is our Leader and along with the sexy, sassy Kerry Ragette Rehkamp .. has chosen this time and location.
The entertainment will be provided by funnyman, Harold Cockerill.
Regrettably, I missed our 40 Year Reunion during this Summer .. and I was unavailable for a similar get-together during early July.
I will, happily, attend this soirée and look forward to seeing my old pals.

I have returned from the Keys for a short period of time due to my U.S. Supreme Court appearance. Soon or later, I will be gone for good.
Just thinking about it – I’m reminded of the old Jerry Jeff Walker tune
(edited) …

Pack up all my dishes
Make note of all good wishes
Say goodbye to the landlord for me
That son of a bitch has always bored me
Throw out them DC papers
And that moldy box of Vanilla Wafers
Adios to all this concrete
Gonna get me some Key West Duval Street
Chorus
If I can just get off of this Capital Beltway
Without getting killed or caught caught caught
I'd be down that road in a cloud of the smoke I toke
For an Oldtown plot that I still ain’t bought bought bought

The Washington Redskins won their 2nd game of the young Season by defeating the previously undefeated Arizona Cardinals, 24-17 before a sellout crowd at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.
The Redskins improved their record to 2-1 on the arm of QB Jason Campbell and the legs of RB Clinton Portis. Campbell completed 22 of 30 passes for 193 yards and 2 TDs and most importantly – no Interceptions.
Portis ran for 68 yards on 21 carries and added 2 Receptions for another 19 yards with a TD .. and, again, most importantly – no Fumbles.
On the other hand, on Defense CB Carlos Rogers Intercepted Cardinals QB Kurt Warner and LB Rocky McIntosh recovered a Fumble by RB Edgerrin James.
WR Santana Moss caught a TD pass for the 2nd straight week and TE Chris Cooley added 72 yards on 7 Receptions .. with no naked pictures of himself on his Blog, this week.

The Redskins next game is at Texas Stadium, Sunday, September 28 at 4:15 PM verses the Dallas Cowbabies.
The game will be televised by FOX and can be seen in the Washington market on channel 5. In Key West, it can viewed it on Direct TVs Sunday Ticket.

Now Baseball: … :crickets:
Enough said.

Greg Biffle won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Dover 400 NSCS sponsored by Principal Financial Group at the Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware. It was Biffle’s 2nd straight win. Matt Kenseth finished 2nd and Carl Edwards finished 3rd.
The Race was the 2nd of 10 in what is being called the ‘Chase’ .. and equates to NASCAR’s Playoffs to Championship run.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch finished 11th, 34th and 43rd respectively.
These 3 Driver’s are currently ranked 7th, 11th and 12th in the ‘Chase’.

The next NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race will be the Kansas 400 at the Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Serptember 28 at 1 PM and televised by ABC .. followed by the Amp Energy 500 at the Talladega SuperSpeedway in Talladega, Alabama on Sunday, October 5 at 2 PM and televised, nationally, by ABC.

Rascal is doing well.

Thank God, Josephine has petered out and will not be a threat in Key West, Florida .. where many of my friends and associates reside AND is my future home.
