Get to know:
HOYT AXTON
( March 25, 1938 – October 26, 1999 )

When I first discovered Hoyt Wayne Axton, he was performing a Guest Appearance spot on the 1979 TV show, ‘WKRP In Cincinnati’.
His acting was very good .. but he sang a song that he wrote entitled Della And The Dealer

:see below:

and it just blew me away !
I, immediately, went out and bought 2 albums of his, A Rusty Old Halo .. and Where Did The Money Go ? which included the songs: Della And The Dealer, Evangelina, Hotel Ritz, Rusty Old Halo, Boney Fingers & Wild Bull Rider.
Hoyt Axton sang with a distinctive baritone voice and a gritty style.

* I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that his Mother, Mae Boren, co-wrote Elvis Presley’s first big hit entitled Heartbreak Hotel.

Hoyt began his career performing Folk Music and wrote the 1963 hit, Greenback Dollar made famous by the Kingston Trio. He wrote more long lasting, memorable songs for other Big-Time artists such as:
Never Been To Spain and Joy To The World for Three Dog Night; The Pusher for Steppenwolf and The No No Song for Ringo Starr. He, also, penned tunes for Joan Baez, John Denver, Brownsville Station and Waylon Jennings. He sang and performed Guitar on Lion In Winter and When The Morning Comes with Linda Ronstadt.

Axton, also appeared on many other TV shows including: ‘Bonanza’, ‘Dukes Of Hazard’, ‘Different Strokes’, ‘Murder She Wrote’, ‘Growing Pains’ and ‘The Bionic Woman’ among others.
Axton, also, composed and sang the theme song to the short-lived TV sitcom, ‘Flo’. :kiss my grits!:
And he appeared in 14 Motion Pictures.

Della And The Dealer
by: Hoyt Axton

1
It was Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake

and a cat named Kalamazoo

Left the city in a pickup truck

gonna make some dreams come true

Yeah they rolled out west where the wild sun sets

and the coyote bays at the moon

Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake

and a cat named Kalamazoo

Chorus
If that cat could talk what tales he'd tell

About Della and the Dealer and the dog as well

But the cat was cool and he never said a mumblin' word

2
Down Tucson way there's a small cafe

where they play a little cowboy tune

And the guitar picker was a friend of mine

by the name of Randy Boone

Yeah Randy played her a sweet love song

and Della got a fire in her eyes

The Dealer had a knife and the dog had a gun

and the cat had a shot of Rye

repeat Chorus

3
Yeah the Dealer was a killer he was evil and mean

and he was jealous of the fire in her eyes

He snorted his coke through a century note

and swore that Boone would die

And the stage was set when the lights went out

there was death in Tucson town

Two shadows ran for the bar backdoor

and one stayed on the ground

repeat Chorus

4
Two shadows ran from the bar that night

and dog and cat ran too

And the tires got hot on the pickup truck

as down the road they flew

It was Della and her lover and a dog named Jake

and a cat named Kalamazoo

Left Tucson in a pickup truck

gonna make some dreams come true

repeat Chorus .

Here's the thing,I been a Hoyt fan for years;I'm 54;but I was talking about him today with some one in a bar{believe it or don't}and so I looked him up on the internet juke box at the bar and there was an imposter passing himself off as Hoyt Axton on the box and probably collecting royalties or some shit like that. You have connections you should look into it for the family because that shit ain't right.Hoyt was one of my heros growing up and well you know.besides I'd never heard of you until yesterday on Katie Couric and then today I'm searching for Hoyt information so I can tell someone about the piereting and there is your name .please look into it.thank you.Sincerly IDAWOLF
