can't be happy at christmas

can’t be happy at christmas
.
1
there’s some people i’m told
so sullen and cold
that they can’t be
happy at christmas
when the big day arrives
in most of their lives
they wonder what happened
to their wish list
and they cry because their lives
are so listless

2
there’s a signpost on the road
that exacerbates their load
and they wonder why they feel
such sadness
so they turn left and right
from the day into the night
because they know life comes down
to good and badness
and they sigh feeling trapped
by all the madness

3
how would you feel if you knew
why the sky was so blue
and the clouds were just
water and air
would it make you realize
how the bird flys
or why they are always
in a pair
would you be amazed or still
not really care

4
and everything shall pass
like the drink from the glass
our time on this planet
is so fleeting
but if you don’t understand
the majesty of this plan
perhaps you must arrange
such a meeting
to find out why your heart
is really beating

5
the cornerstone is set
to carry all the debt
that is known as the
building’s foundation
and our lives are the same
because of where we came
is what is known as
the eternal creation
and it’s recorded in time
as the manifestation

6
yes they can wind their lives uptight
and hope with all their might
that they can get across
the narrow isthmus
they can scream – they can shout
they can cry – they can pout
but until they make it
their business
they will continue to swing
and miss much

and still they won’t be
happy at christmas

down on jonquil lane

verse 1
i remember in my first football game
i ran towards the wrong goal
and in my first baseball game
i threw the bat out of control
the first bicycle ride i ever took
was on a bike that i stole
and i caught my long britches leg
right in the chain

verse 2
to get to my elementary school
i had to ride the yellow bus
although many times i missed it
and that sure caused a fuss
i was always late because
so many morning things to discuss
arithmatic, english and history
rolling around in my brain

hook
down on jonquil lane

verse 3
growing up meant many things
not the least was the girl thing
i found i could get all the attention
if i learned all the words to sing
and it all seemed to explode big
when the weather turned to spring
would it be okay if i mentioned
someone(thing) named mary jane

verse 4
once you have become grown
you gotta get a car
life changes at that particular time
a bike won’t get you that far
and what you get sitting in that driver’s seat
surely can be described as bizarre
but no matter what happens
you’re taught not to complain

omega
throughout all the many years
through happiness and pain
i find myself thinking about being
