Midnight Confessions

Written by Rob Grill, P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri
and performed by the Grass Roots

The sound of your footsteps
Telling me that you're near
Your soft gentle motion, baby
Brings out the need in me that no-one can hear, except

In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
I love you

But a little gold ring you wear on your hand makes me understand
There's another before me, you'll never be mine
I'm wasting my time
Staggering through the daytime
Your image on my mind
Passing so close beside you baby
Sometimes the feelings are so hard to hide, except

In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
I love you

But a little gold ring you wear on your hand makes me understand
There's another before me, you'll never be mine
I'm wasting my time

In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you

Na na-nana na na na-na
Na na-nana na na na-na
Na na-nana na na na-na
Na na-nana na na na-na
Na na-nana na na na-na
Na na-nana na na na-naaaaaaaa

chapter Nine … page 74

Beatles’ Land

Thom had made it a point to not ask the foolish questions of where he was or what year it was. He was fairly sure he was, still, in the past and the accents of the persons he had heard seemed to match that of New York. The signs that he had witnessed had not been exact in determining his precise location. His guess was at an Airport. But which one ? And what year. And why was this large group of people assembled. Possibly a President or other World leader was departing or arriving, today.
.
Eventually, Thom was anxious to learn the identity of the tote and the contents, therein. As he examined the first few items, he was shocked to find more than a few different credit cards in as many different names. There were, also, several checkbooks and again, with as many different names attached. It appeared that this culprit was a thief of some renown. Then, there was cash and lots of it. It was not in any sequence and apparently stolen, as well. When Thom felt that he could not be surprised any more – he stumbled across two names that caused him great concern. The first name was scribbled on the back of a School voucher pass authorizing an additional credit for $ 18 in the School store and cafeteria. The name was Donnie Blasingame. Thom sat there in a daze trying to come to a conclusion about why this was present. Upon further examination, Thom located Donnie’s Milford address and phone number. It was where Donnie lived with his parents as a Schoolboy. How had this thief pilfered something from a child in another Town ?
.
The other name that was found was attached to the pouch and in all likelihood, the true identity of this person. It was Herschel Cranston.
Could this be the Herschel that Donnie rode to Washington, D.C. with in February of 1964 ? Thom reexamined the voucher and found the date 1964 stenciled on it’s back. How could this be. Herschel had stolen Donnie’s property and yet, traveled with him to a concert.

… The name was Donnie Blasingame. ..

Lynda Bird Johnson Robb

Friday April 24, 2009
*********************

I was physically pushed in the back by
Lynda Bird Johnson Robb
President LBJs Daughter

It was 1974.
I was 25 years old, for Chrissake !
And she pushed me.
Put her hand in the middle of my back and shoved.
THEN she remarks, “Oh ! Go on !”
(in an exasperated voice, as if I were the Town moron)

Let me back up a bit. First, I was working for Rogers Jones, a Heating & Air Conditioning company in northern Virginia. I was a residential Air Duct Installer. You could get your britches ripped quite easily handling sheet metal and so I usually only wore secondary Jeans.

This particular day, I was assigned to do a punch list HVAC work. Meaning the family was moving in .. but the final inspection wasn’t approved, yet. I had just ripped some of my nice Jeans .. and was wearing a pair of really old ones. They were high-waters, for sure. Admittedly, it looked dumb.

The residence in which I was working was that of Virginia Governor Charles Robb and his wife, Lynda Bird Johnson Robb who was President Johnson’s oldest daughter.

I was trying to determine where a condensate drain clog was. I was on my way to the attic carrying a bucket of water and wearing those pants that stopped just short of my ankles. And there she stood. With a box of towels that she was putting on hallway linen closet shelves. I was just as happy to walk by, quietly and continue my work. But, no. She looks at me and asks if I’m going into the attic. She had just randomly placed some boxes up there. She was going to tell me to be careful. I said that I was indeed going up there. And so she tells me to ‘enter at my own peril’.
Okay, I understand what she said .. and what it means – but I didn’t completely hear her at first and before I realized what I was doing, I said, “Huh !” You know – Gomer like.

I guess she figured that I was as stupid in the head as I looked in the ass.
And so with her University of Texas education, she was appalled that I was a dumbass .. and she pushed me and incredulously told me,
“Oh just go on!”

B!tch !

So I head for the attic and with every step I took .. I looked back as I was thinking of what to say in return. I never did make any further remarks but I had many things that I wanted to say.
But it was best that I played shutmouth.

Take It To The Limit

Thursday April 23, 2009

Take It To The Limit

Written by Don Henley, Randy Meisner and Glenn Frey
and performed by the Eagles

All alone at the end of the of the evening
And the bright lights have faded to blue
I was thinking bout a woman who might have loved me
and I never knew
You know I’ve always been a dreamer
(spent my life running round)
And it’s so hard to change
(can’t seem to settle down)
But the dreams I’ve seen lately
Keep on turning out and burning out
And turning out the same

So put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit
one more time

You can spend all your time making money
You can spend all your love making time
If it all fell to pieces tomorrow
Would you still be mine?
And when you’re looking for your freedom
(nobody seems to care)
And you can’t find the door
(can’t find it anywhere)
When there’s nothing to believe in
Still you’re coming back, you’re running back
You’re coming back for more

So put me on a highway
And show me a sign
And take it to the limit one more time

Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
Take it to the limit
one more time

Beatles’ Land

Once again, the Orb was Wandering the time continuum without termination coordinates set. And once again, the EOB was attempting to navigate his vessel applying extra telepathy while still suffering from an absence of full stability. The preemptive Jump has once again exhausted the EOBs energy. During this timeless, maneuver, he would require extensive meditative tranquility. Thom, too, is suffering from superfluity and would be obligated to hibernate for a substantial duration.
.
Soon, Thom was resting coma like as the Orb ventured aimlessly in near levity. Even though Thom’s body was in sleep mode, his thoughts were active in trance. The vision of Milford, circa 1967, was uncontrollably dominating his oblongata state. Seeing a younger Donnie Blasingame seemed to peak Thom’s imagination. Donnie had taken Thom and his brother, Dhan into New York city to his Radio Station studio when Thom was but 12 years old. Thom enjoyed seeing how the business of music to the masses was presented.
.
Thom’s cognizance began to replay the sounds of Donnie’s stereo that was heard in between the mowing cycles of Ms. Stinson’s lawn.
.
First, there was the mind expanding Lucy in the sky with diamonds .. picture yourself in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies .. somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly, a girl with kaleidoscope eyes. And then, What do I do when my love is away. (does it worry you to be alone) how do I feel by the end of the day (are you sad because you're on your own). Finally, the soliloquies of It was twenty years ago today, Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play .. they've been going in and out of style but they're guaranteed to raise a smile. so may I introduce to you the act you've known for all these years, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
.
It was Beatlemania in Thom’s head. Music that his parents listened to throughout his wonderful childhood was, now, guiding this craft.

… (are you sad because you're on your own). ..

COSMIC COWBOY

Thursday April 16, 2009
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Cosmic Cowboy
.
Written by Michael Martin Murphey
and performed, predominately, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

Merry-go-rounds and burial grounds
Are all the same to me.
Horses on posts and kids and ghosts
Are spirits that we ought to set free.
Them city slicker pickers
got a lot of slicker licks than me.
But ridin the range and acting strange
Is where I want to be.
.
And I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
I just wanna ride and rope and hoot (hoot!)
Well I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
Talkin bout a supernatural country rockin galoot
.
Well skinny dippin and lone star sippin
and steel guitar
Are just as good as Hollywood
and some boogie-woogie bars.
Im gonna buy me a vest and a head out west
My little woman and myself.
And when we come to town
the people gather around
And marvel at the little babys health.
.
And I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
I just wanna ride and rope and hoot (hoot!)
Well I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
I said a supernatural country rockin galoot.
.
Then a big raccoon and a harvest moon
keep rolling through my mind.
And a home on the range where the antelope play
Is sometimes hard to find.
So dont bury me on the lone prairie.
Id rather play there alive.
Well, I'm doing my best
I keep my farm in the west
My little Bronco in over-drive.
.
And I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
I just wanna ride and rope and hoot (hoot!)
Well I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
Talkin bout a supernatural country rockin galoot.
And I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
I just wanna ride and rope and hoot (hoot!)
Well I just wanna be a cosmic cowboy
Talkin bout a supernatural country rockin galoot
And up is not the way I wanna shoot

Thom’s Birth Day
.

Without speaking a word, Thom explained to the EOB what had transpired in the last several hours. He, also made it clear that they must Jump, again, quickly to avoid any possible capture. He asked if the EOB had regained enough metaphysical strength to get back to ’09. The EOB responded that he had strength but maybe not enough to guide the craft in the correct time continuum.

Thom, then, asked if the EOB was angry with him for what he had done to which the EOB responded that he did not get angry. The EOB further explained that he completely understood Thom’s universal curiosity but reminded Thom that if he’s caught or injured in the past – he may never see his family, again. Thom understood.

As the two of them prepared to make another blind Jump, their visionary sightline of the immediate area showed the Police cruiser that had been circling the Hospital parking area had stopped near the path that Thom traveled to and from the Orb. The Policeman was out of the vehicle and surveying the area not that far where the Orb was situated. Another Police K-9 vehicle was coming into view which told the two that the Jump was immediately necessary.

As preparations were made to vacate 1967, the first Policeman detected the sight which was the Orb. Unsure of what he was witnessing, he radioed back to Base for instrustions. He was told to go back to the asphalt and meet with the other Officer and his K-9 companion. Then, they were to wait for the Detectives who were trained in supernatural trama. It was another 10 minutes before that happened. Once it did, the four Officers and the K-9 began their trek back into the wooded underbrush. By the time they had located the Orb’s landing zone – the Jump had taken place leaving only a Report to be filled and Clark’s Drugstore shy 95 cents. There was the question of who had mowed Ms. Sinson’s yard but no one was hurt and Thom’s parents and Grandmother were otherwise busy.

… the Jump had taken place ..

RAY DAVIES

Friday April 10, 2009
*******************

Austin City Limits presents
Ray Davies
of the legendary Rock Band, the KINKS

Let me begin my remarks, today, by saying that I watch a lot of Public Broadcasting Service on Television. There are so many interesting programs that they air and mostly, there is no slant nor spin. They tend to tell it like it is.
And this includes Saturday’s Home Improvement shows and Cooking shows. Also, on Saturday afternoon/evening at 5 PM, the PBS affiliate of WVPT (Virginia Public Television) airs a live-music show entitled Austin City Limits.

Austin City Limits is an
American Television music program and a staple of the Public Broadcasting Service. Austin City Limits was initially created with an eye and ear toward original Texas music, featuring artists that created innovative new sounds in everything from Western Swing and Texas Blues to Tejano Music, Progressive Country and Rock n' Roll. The series went on to feature a wide range of American roots artists, covering a variety of styles and expanding beyond the borders of the Lone Star State. As the program’s audience has grown, the music has encompassed regional, national and even international performers, and producer Terry Lickona continues to seek a balance of music genres in every new season. Austin City Limits, today, focuses on the unique contributions of diverse artists, music and songwriting from around the world.
First aired in 1976, Austin City Limits has become American Television's longest-running concert music program. The program is taped live by PBS member station KLRU on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Images of Austin, Texas, the self-proclaimed ‘Live Music Capital of the World’, are seen in the opening credits. ACL's set also features a mock skyline of Austin. The show inspired the Austin City Limits Music Festival, an annual live music festival at Zilker Park in Austin.

This past Saturday’s program featured Ray Davies. He the Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist and Frontman of the legendary Hall Of Fame, Rock ensemble, The Kinks.
You’ll remember the The Kinks from such tunes as:
Sunny Afternoon, Lola, All Day And All Of The Night, You Really Got Me, Tired Of Waiting On You, A Well Respected Man, Father Christmas, Dedicated Follower of Fashion & Celluloid Heroes.

Davies styled this performance the ‘I’m Not Like Everybody Else’ show which is the name of his new, solo LP (CD). In lieu of highlighting this performance with all oldies, he mixed oldies with many of the new songs from that CD.
Some of the songs that I remember him performing were:
I'm Not like Everybody Else, Good Times Gone, After the Fall, Next Door Neighbor, Sunny Afternoon, The Tourist, Things Are Gonna Change, A Long Way from Home, The Getaway, All Day And All Of The Night, Low Budget .. & 20th Century Man.

I really enjoy Ray Davies’ laid back lyrical style and crooning vocals. He’ll always remind me of listening to The Kinks in my youth although he is only five years my senior.

If you get Austin City Limits in your local area, I strongly urge you to give it a listen. Every week, there is a new Artist to sample. Live music is always going to be better than remastered recorded junk that credits more the engineer than the musician(s).
But don’t misundertake (sic) me. I’m not implying that these shows are happening as you see them. It’s like Hank Kingsly of The Larry Sanders Show used to announce at the show’s opening when he’d report, “Live .. on tape from Hollywood”. These shows are taped but it’s a Live taping. There are no engineering remastering nor vocal rearranging. You’re hearing it Raw.

Across The Universe
Written by John Lennon and performed by the Beatles

Words are flying out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither while they pass
They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
.
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Images of broken light
which dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe
.
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love
which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe
.
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Jai guru deva Jai guru deva

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter Eight … page 67

Thom’s Birth Day

Thom knew where to dump the grass clippings because nearly everyone on Oxford Road kept a Compost pile in the rear of their property. Each time, Thom walked to the Compost pile, he would be near the homes on Merlin Avenue which was the next street over behind Oxford Road. Those lots were smaller with newer homes. The family that lived directly behind Ms. Stinson was the Blasingames. They were young newlyweds in 1967 and didn’t have any children until Thom was 5 years old. Donnie Blasingame worked as a Disc Jockey in New York city. Each time that Thom dumped the grass clippings, which was less than 50 feet from the Blasingame’s – he could hear their stereo. He could plainly here the songs from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album.

Thom was hurriedly trying to complete his task in order to have a few dollars in his pocket and time to view his family. By the time he was about half way through, he noticed his family’s Fairlane pulling into their driveway. Thom made a slower than normal pass this time so that he could view his parents and Grandmother .. and of course, himself. This time, Thom’s brother, Dhaniel was with them. He must have been being babysat by someone. Possibly friends in West Haven where his Grandmother lived. Thom watched them all enter the family’s back door as he pushed the mower over an area that he had already mowed. Just before they disappeared into the house, Thom’s father looked over at him and hesitated, momentarially. Once they were all inside, Thom tried to finish up his hired task as quickly as possible.
.
After a few more minutes had passed, Thom noticed a Milford Town Police cruiser drive up the street, turn around and come back and park in front of Ms. Stinson’s house. At that time, Thom’s father walked out the family’s front door and approach the Policeman. Thom knew something was amiss and decided to take action.

she's not dead

1
my phone rang today
a friend was on the line
i hadn't heard her voice
in quite a very long time
she was feeling blue
about choices that she made
she could've had anything
her voice began to fade

chorus
is debbie reynolds dead
no no no, she's in lucketts
in her bed
so debbie reynolds is alive
yes yes yes, flying united
she will arrive
upon a wing, upon a prayer
without a song, without a dare
debbie reynolds, debbie reynolds
she's not dead, she's not dead

2
my memory is of happy times
her life is that of change
when we lived together at the hooker house
we traveled the wide open range
most people thought she was cute
that i would steal her heart
it didn't happen quite that way
i couldn’t finish what i wouldn't start

repeat chorus

3
if there was something i could do
to ease her her melancholy mind
i would cause i am her friend
just not the marrying kind
i would be happy to hang with her
a shoulder for her head
i'll share all my exciting times
but i don't know about her bed

repeat chorus

she's not dead …
20 x - out.

The LONE RANGER

Friday April 3, 2009
*********************

Cliff & Larry are visited by
The Lone Ranger
At their Radio Station gig

Many years ago, when Cliff Eastham & I were working as Interns at a local Radio Station – there was a promotional Feed we were doing at a local Car Dealership.
The Guest that had been commissioned as the Celebrity was Clayton Moore, the man who played The Lone Ranger for years on TV.

Now, Clayton Moore was very into this Character that he played and showed up wearing his Mask, his big white Hat and his Gun & Holster.
It was cool.

Cliff’s & my job was basic; we were there to make sure the Radio cables were connected, properly and that the Talent was okay.

After the 3 hour Promotion was concluded, we rolled up the cables – threw them in the back of Cliff’s Chrysler Pioneer Station Wagon and were ready to split.
The Car Dealership hadn’t finalized the money transfer to Clayton Moore .. so while we waited .. I talked Cliff into smoking a fatty with me out behind a tash dumpster. Cliff wasn’t much of a smoker, back then .. but I was.

Finally, after nearly everybody had left - Clayton Moore came out into the Parking Lot looking lost. He spots me & Cliff and knowing that it was our job to take care of him .. he tells us his Car hasn’t arrived and there must be a snafu.
So I ask where he needs to go .. and he tells me that it’s a Hotel a few miles away. So, stoned as we were – we offered to take him .. if he didn’t mind sitting in the back with the cables and wires, etc.
He agrees .. and off we go. Cliff lets me drive his car cause he’s high as a kite off the Michoacan. At the first Intersection we came to just outside the Car Dealership – a BMW cuts in front of us .. and whacks into Cliff ‘s old car. I doubt it hurt Cliff’s old bomb much but the other Driver doesn’t stop.
So, I holler at him .. and we started following him. He picks up speed and so do I. Then as if to try and ditch us – the BMW starts flying and turing abruptly, left and right. Me, right behind. Stoned as hell.

So, seeing he isn’t shaking me .. the BMW stops. Out steps a man with a businessman’s haircut and a dark Suit. So I get out. I tell him that he hit us and I’m going to call the Cops.
He laughed and asks who are the Cops gonna believe .. him or some longhaired, bearded hippie with ruby red eyes.

Just then, Clayton Moore, still wearing his Lone Ranger apparel .. steps out of the back of Cliff’s old Pioneer Station Wagon while wires and Radio Equipment spills out onto the pavement.
“ They’ll believe me, Citizen ! “ says Clayton Moore aka Lone Ranger in a proper and firm voice.

I swear – you should have seen that other Driver. His expression was priceless.
And he starts to talk .. and stammers for second. Then he says, very meekly,
“ Gosh, Lone Ranger – I’m sorry. I didn’t know it was you ! “

* I’m so glad to have my Memories .. as I lose my youth. *

Fresh Air
Written and performed by: Quicksilver Messenger Service

Oh, what you do to me,
oh, what you do to me, little girl.

Ooo, have another hit
of sweet air,
come on, ooo, have another hit.

I want to know where you're going,
I want to know, sweet mama,
where you're gonna go, yeah.

Ooo, have another hit
of fresh air,
ooo, have another hit.

Oh, baby, what you gonna do,
oh, honey, what you gonna do, sweet thing?
Ooo, have another hit
of sweet love,
ooo, have another hit.

I love you, yes I do, babe,
and I love you, I do, sweet lips.

Ooo, have another hit
of sweet California sunshine,
ooo, have another hit.

Take me home,
take me home, take me home with you,

Take me home,
I wanna go home with you, little girl.
Ooo, have another hit
of fresh air, ooo, have another hit.

Thom’s Birth Day

He, also, could not locate the pinball machine. He remembered it being in close proximity to the large bay window overlooking the railroad switchyard.

Soon, Thom summoned the nerve to speak and he asked the man at the checkout counter where the pinball machine was. Once the man began to talk, he realized it was ‘old man Clark’ .. but he had more hair than Thom remembered. Mr. Clark snarled and indicated that he’d never allow a pinball machine in his establishment. He said that would just bring in the little bratty kids who spent nickels and not dollars. Thom’s mind was jogged to the fact that this was 1967, not the 1970s and 80s as many of his memories came from. Thom decided that he better spend some money instead of just wandering around in the store. And so he sat at the Lunch Counter and ordered some coffee and a piece of apple pie. After eating some of the pie and drinking most of his coffee, he decided to pay up and meander further up the train tracks and maybe have a look at his childhood home.

The bill came to 95 cents and Thom could not help but chuckle at the drastic changes in product pricing in 42 years. Thom still had his wallet and pulled out a ten dollar bill to pay. Mr. Clark took the ten but starred at it for a few seconds before asking Thom about it. He said that it looked different and upon closer inspection, he saw the series 2006. Then, he raised his voice and chastised Thom for trying to pass off counterfeit money in his store. This is something that Thom did not consider and begged for forgiveness. He made the excuse that his kids must have been playing with his wallet and stuffed play money in it. Mr. Clark who had always been tight with his money demanded that Thom pay up with real money. Thom knew that he did not have any reserve notes that old and swore that he’d return with the proper payment but it was too late.

… The bill came to 95 cents ..
