WILLIE or ELVIS ... You Were Always On My Mind

WILLIE or ELVIS

This, usually, turns into who do you like best, Willie Nelson or Elvis Presley.
But my query is which version of this song moves you the most ?

You Were Always On My Mind
written by: Willie Nelson

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Maybe I didn't hold you
All those lonely, lonely times
And I guess I never told you
I'm so happy that you're mine
If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm so sorry I was blind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance to keep you satisfied, satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

I selected Studio versions for your choices
because Willie nailed every one of his Live versions .. whereas Elvis seldom, if ever, did.
So, to be fair – here’s each with their Boardmen to clean ‘em up.
* Elvis did use his backgroud group, The Jordanaires, heavily.
* Willie, basically, sang solo .. and played his own Guitar.

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

One ... Coventry ... 9

In 2005, Christina Applegate came and stayed until the small hours of the morning. She was supposed to be escorted by her boyfriend but he did not make it. Someone had some Tequila and by the time midnight rolled around, she was in the Hot Tub singing ‘Love And Marriage’. No one made a big deal out of her being such a huge star and that seemed to to be what was causing her to have such a great time. She promised everyone that she’d come back, again really soon but as far as anyone knows, she hasn’t.

The Shirelles sang at a party, one year and Michael Stipe came to watch them. He said that he loved that old Motown sound and really enjoyed the female voices. That was the period of time that he was associating with Ms. Natalie Merchant. She was not there but everyone was asking about her. Michael seemed to be truly enjoying himself. When anybody famous shows up at Clyde’s, they all are treated normally and they all seem to have a good time.

… Someone had some Tequila ..

don't take me

Editor’s Note:

The year was 1989.

On October 17 at 5:04 P.M., a major earthquake struck the San Francisco Bay area. The earthquake was nicknamed the World Series Earthquake because it occurred just before a World Series baseball game was scheduled to begin in Candlestick Park.

That year, Hurricane Hugo was a destructive Category 5 hurricane that struck Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Puerto Rico, St. Croix, South Carolina and North Carolina in September of the Atlantic hurricane season, killing 82 people and leaving 56,000 homeless.

Between April 15 and June 4, Chinese Labor Activists demonstarted against the Chinese Communist Party’s ruling class in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

don’t take me

1
i want to go to a baseball game
but i don’t want to be in an earthquake
i want to see the crowd react
but i don’t won’t to feel the stadium shake
i want a hot dog, some peanuts and a draft
but i don’t want a bellyache
so take me to candlestick park
but don’t take me to an earthquake

2
i want to go to a southern beach
but i don’t want to be in a hurricane
i want to enjoy the water so warm
but i don’t want to go down the drain
i want to swim and fish and boat
but i don’t want to feel any pain
so take me to the outer banks
but don’t take me to a hurricane

3
i want to go to a student protest
but i don’t want my friends to die
i want to stand up for the right
but i don’t want to cry all night
i’d love to pose for the cameras on the world
but tanks aren’t a pretty sight
so take me to tiananmen square
but don’t give me a terrible fright

don’t take me
no don’t take me
oh don’t take me
.. to see anyone die

( repeat verse 1 )

Dear Blog

Dear Blog

I have a Summer Cold, this week ! #&%@!*^) !

I have .. and will continue to keep this Blog apolitical. For the record – I am an Independent voter. I vote for whomever the hell I feel like. I refuse to join a group or party and tow THEIR line.
Entertainment is my supreme goal at this Blog.

That said - yesterday, I received an e-mail from an acquaintance that was bulk mailed to him .. and from him to his address book. Some of you may have seen it, as well. It was a correspondence from a military Captain in Afghanistan named Jeffery Porter. Cpt. Porter tells EVERYBODY that he witnessed Barack Obama’s recent arrival in that War zone. He spews a hatred towards Obama saying that he OBVIOUSLY does not love the Troops. He reports that Obama blew off the Troop line without so much as a look in their direction.
He added that Obama, again, blew past the line of Troops to get a photo op of him playing Basketball with several GIs.
Furthermore, Cpt. Porter assesses that the NBA Players and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders showed more respect to the Troops than did Barack Obama.
He completes his statements by telling us that the slick Obama that we all see on the TV is not the real Obama. That we don’t know the caliber of this man and that he is a fake.

Now, this is something that would certainly be of importance to a U.S. voter in 2008 IF and let me repeat IF it were true. But it was not.
What embarrassed me as much as this ‘dirty trick’ was the several e-mail recipients that responded by saying that this bit of news was disheartening.
The first thing that I did was research these accusations and found it to be completely false. Made up. I found pictures of Barack Obama shaking hands with the Troops .. AND a retraction by Cpt. Porter saying his correspondence was supposed to be a private joke to his family .. ALTHOUGH he sent it bulk mailed to over a thousand e-mail addresses AND pleaded that these recipients send it to ALL their address book.
I can only wonder what those people who bought this ‘dirty trick’ as gospel would believe to be truthful JUST because they read it.
I am saddened .. but not shocked. I am old enough to have witnessed these types of ‘dirty tricks’ throughout my lifetime.
Also, Cpt. Porter is being investigated by the Military for illegal actions.
Shame. Shame.

On Saturday around Noon, my Daughter drove out towards Ashburn, Virginia to a local sandwich shoppe to procure Lunch for both of us. About 15 minutes later she phoned me saying that there was a terrible traffic jam just West of Route 28. Apparently, she had traveled a distance of about 2 feet in 10 minutes. I told her to turn around and find another food establishment, which she did.
What was the reason for this traffic mess ? Well, the Washington Redskins were hosting Fan Appreciation Day at Redskins Park, their Ashburn home.
They were having a intrasquad scrimmage, also.
These types of events in most NFL cities draw between 500 and 5,000 fans.
Yesterday, the Redskins attendance was a staggering 28,000 people.
The traffic jam was not isolated to Church Road. Loudoun County Parkway’s 5 mile stretch from the Toll Road out to Redskins Park was a parking lot. Nobody was moving. Finally, vehicles were pulling off the roads onto any grassy spot available .. and walking to this event. It was truly Woodstock-esque.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department reports that they have NEVER witnessed such road congestion.
Newly acquired DE Jason Taylor and new Head Coach Jim Zorn as well as the new Draft Choices and Free Agents have had their first glimpse of Redskins Nation. Taylor and Zorn are on record as being AMAZED.

The Redskins will open the Pre-Season schedule for all NFL teams in the Hall Of Fame game verses the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday August 3, 2008 in Canton, Ohio. That day, Darrell Green and Art Monk will be inducted in the NFL Hall Of Fame. Congratulations to those Redskins GREATS.

So join with me, now, in singing …

Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath! Fight for old D.C.!
Run or pass and score -- we want a lot more!
Beat 'em, Swamp 'em, Touchdown! -- Let the points soar!
Fight on, fight on 'Til you have won Sons of Wash-ing-ton. Rah!, Rah!, Rah!
Hail to the Redskins! Hail Victory!
Braves on the Warpath! Fight for old D.C.!

* On August 17, 1938, “Hail to the Redskins” made its debut as the official fight song of the Washington Redskins. Since its debut 54 years ago, the song, written by renowned band leader Barnee Breeskin, has had a few minor changes from the original lyrics penned by Corinne Griffith(wife of owner George Preston Marshall). Griffith’s original lyrics had “Fight for old Dixie” instread of today’s “Fight for old D.C.” Also, Griffith originally had “Scalp ‘em, Swamp ‘em. We will take‘em big score. Read ‘em, weep ‘em Touchdown, we want heap more” instead of today’s version.

Now, Baseball: The Nats still suck after losing all 6 of their games this past week in California; 3 in San Francisco to the Giants and 3 in Los Angeles to the Dodgers. They haven’t scored a stinkin’ run in the last 19 freaking innings.
Enough said.

Jimmie Johnson won NASCAR’s Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Carl Edwards finished 2nd and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Denny Hamlin finished 3rd.
JGR’s Tony Stewart finished 23rd.

The next NASCAR Race will be sponsored by Cheez-It at the Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 3.

Soon, I will fly to Key West, Florida but I will not report it here at this Blog nor will I elaborate on it, further.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 88 degrees with a Relative Humidity of only 63 %.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 90 degrees but with a Relative Humidity of 88 %.

Okay, thanks for dropping by this Blog, today.
I hope to see you, tomorrow, for amateur Lyricist day at this URL.

My time is, now, up .. I thank you for yours.

Cudjo's Cave

Friday July 25, 2008
******************

written by:
Larry Curtis Spurlock

Don’t turn out the lights at
Cudjo’s Cave
... without telling us, first !

My immediate Family migrated to Northern Virginia in 1955 from the Appalachian area of Southwestern Virginia. That’s where both my Parents were from and all four of my Grandparents were living .. as well as many relatives.
Every year, after that – our Summer vacations were trips back to that area.
Each new School year would come and my Classmates would brag about their vacations in exotic places such as Amusement Parks, Ocean Beeches and Grand Hotels .. while I was left to only ponder what it would be like to spend a vacation at some place other than my Grandpas’ & Grandmas’ houses.

As the years went by .. and my older Siblings grew up and left home – there were fewer of us to make the sojourn ‘down home’ as my Family always referred to it.
My Family, then, began taking mini excursions from the Grandparents’ homes.
We went through the Great Smokey Mountains several times .. and once, on our way back to Lee County, Virginia – my Mother, Father and one of my Sisters stopped at a tourist attraction called Cudjo’s Cave. It was in Cumberland Gap, Tennessee .. or maybe Kentucky. They were very close .. and we went through both .. as well as North Carolina.

I think I was 12 years old, during this one trip. Old enough to know better – but too young to resist.
Regardless, my Mother did not want to sightsee in the Cave because the Guide said it was over an hour and a half trek through the vast underground. So, only my Dad and my Sister and I ventured into the cool Cavern.
It was a hot Summer day .. and the Cave was a welcome cool respite. My Dad’s eyeglasses fogged up immediately as we entered down the initial steep ramp.

It was really quite beautiful and something that I had never experienced before. I was mystified and enthralled. There were probably 30 of us on this Tour and as the Tour progressed, I moved up to the front of the TourGroup from the spot about half way back, where my Dad and Sister were.
I listened very intently to everything the Tour Guide said.

At, one point – the Tour Guide was going to explain that we were so deep underground .. that absolutely zero light was present without the manmade artificial lighting that was illuminating our walkway. He would further explain that if you stayed there for two years or more – you would become blind from having no light enter your eyes.
BUT .. he did not say any of that UNTIL he reached up and flipped the light switch .. casting us all into total darkness. It surprised all of us and I heard a few gasps when the lighting disappeared.
I don’t know if it was the sudden darkness .. or the fact that I was only 12 years old .. or that I had moved away from my Dad & Sister – but it startled me so much that, for some reason, I reached out and grabbed the TourGuide. J

After the minute or so of total darkness and the TourGuide had finished his summation .. he flipped the light switch back on. It was at that time that I saw that when I had grabbed the TourGuide .. I had ripped three of the buttons off his shirt. He was fumbling with where the missing buttons were supposed to be .. and looking at the first 2 or 3 of us, in line .. trying to figure out which one of us had done this.

As the Tour continued on .. I, methodically, worked my way back to the middle of the pack of people .. back to where my Dad & Sister were.

When the Tour ended .. and the TourGuide brought us all out of the Cave through a different opening than we had entered – we were right by where we had parked our car and where my Mother was sitting patiently awaiting for us to return.

And so as my Dad & Sister & I got into our car to continue on back to my Grandparents’ homes – my Mom remarked, “ Did you see that poor old fellow who was your all’s TourGuide ? Poor thing couldn’t afford a new shirt. The one he had on, had buttons missing all the way down the front ! “
My Dad mentioned that he had not noticed that at the beginning of the walk. My Sister, who was always a thorn in my side, blurted out that Larry (me) probably did it when he (I) was up in the front of the line.
My Mother admonished my Sister for her negative comments, without probable cause.
Me ? I sat in my back seat corner of the car, playing shutmouth.

It was a great experience. One that I remember, fully, to this day.
I learned many, many things on that Tour of the underground .. but the most important thing was:

Don’t turn out the lights at
Cudjo’s Cave
... without telling us, first !

Rocky Top

Thursday July 24, 2008

most popular version recorded by:
Osborne Brothers

** ROCKY TOP **

If you would like to watch and hear this performance ..

1
Wish that I was on ol’ Rocky Top,
Down in the Tennessee hills.
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top,
Ain't no telephone bills.
Once I had a girl on Rocky Top,
Half bear, the other half cat.
Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop,
And I still dream about that.

Hook
Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ol’ Rocky Top,
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Rocky Top, Tennessee.

2
Once two strangers climbed ol’ Rocky Top,
Lookin' for a moonshine still.
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top,
Reckon they never will.
Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top,
Dirt's too rocky by far.
That's why all the folks on Rocky Top,
Get their corn from a jar.

Hook (repeats)
Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ol’ Rocky Top,
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Rocky Top, Tennessee.

3
I've had years of cramped up city life,
Trapped like a duck in a pen.
All I know is it's a pity life,
Can't be simple again.

Hook (repeats)
Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me.
Good ol’ Rocky Top,
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Rocky Top, Tennessee.
Rocky Top, Tennessee !

* Editor’s Note:

This song was written by a married couple, songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They wrote Rocky Top in about ten minutes, in 1967. The Bryants were working in Gatlinburg, Tennessee on a collection of slow-tempo songs for a project for Archie Campbell and Chet Atkins. Writing the fast-paced Rocky Top served as a temporary diversion for them. Recorded by the Osborne Brothers in 1967, the song was a top 40 hit on the Country Music Charts in early 1968.

The original Rocky Top song describes a place called Rocky Top, Tennessee, which is one of the three peaks of Thunderhead Mountain in Tennessee (located in the Smoky Mountains) in the eastern part of the state. The peak is actually located along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina.

The Jam band, Phish played Rocky Top regularly from 1987 to 2003. There have been additional cover versions of the song by such Country Music Artists as Dolly Parton, Conway Twitty, and Billie Jo Spears.

In 2005, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ranked Rocky Top number seven on its list of 100 Songs of the South.

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter One ... Coventry ... page 5

There would be no need to wait in the vestibule, it was less than ten minutes and the air outside was almost balmy. He would stand under the cantilever and wait.

The Preacher and his wife, Dorothy, pull from the Church's North parking lot and down Main Street to Bridge Road. They will soon be in the Highlands and at their Coventry Hills home. They have lived there for over six years during the period that Daniel has been the Preacher at People's Church. Although the parsonage on the Church grounds is provided for the Preacher, the Willoby's choose to remain in their home in the hills. The parsonage is now being utilized as an emergency shelter and clinic for those who are truly in need. Dorothy runs the daily operation and accepts no pay for her many, many hours of community service. She has three full time helpers who are paid by the Church. There are other women in the Church who volunteer their time and services in attempt to help those who really need it.

Bonnie Waters is one of the ladies that work full-time for the
Church. Her time is split between the Shelter and custodial duties in the Church. She came to the People's Church at about the same time as the Willoby's did. She usually rides with one of them in to Church and/or school. Bonnie does not drive. Her husband, Cleve died from cancer in 1990, he was sixty years old at the time. Bonnie is currently sixty-two years old and has a son and daughter in their twenties and three grandchildren. They could easily be using the shelter and clinic but instead Bonnie works there. They live on the Flats between town and the Northern Hills. Everyone from all around knows the Waters as fair and honest people who run a salvage auto operation. Things have been pretty difficult since Mr. Waters died but the whole family is hanging together.
Her kids, Simone and Cleve, Jr. are her strength.

… accepts no pay for her many, many hours ..

woodstock ( 20 years ) revisited

1
it was 20 years ago - when ray warren saw me
on florida avenue in herndon v a
where you going larry - rayzor willie says to me
hell i don’t know i says to ray

2
there's a concert they’re having - in upstate new york
ol’ ray says he wants me to go
ray, i got no money - no car and no job
just how you think i'm gonna show

3
ray is home from viet nam - but he's got another year
and he says he's got plenty of money
he'll pay my way if i'll help drive - he wants me along
cause i'm so damn funny

4
i'm nineteen years old - just six weeks before i’m drafted
this is something i've got to do
we pick up c e smann - my old friend
and we're on the road thursday the fourteenth at two

5
c e smann’s got no bread - ray's virtually footing the bill
but he says he isn't dumb
let's have fun - and do something we'll remember
for twenty years to come

chorus
woodstock
i had no idea what you'd do to me
woodstock
and they said the show was free
woodstock .. woodstock .. woodstock
now i see
woodstock .. woodstock .. woodstock
you had to be - free for me

6
we drove ten hours - but when we got to woodstock
they said the show was fifty more miles up the road
we got to the site - friday morning at eleven and by noon
the music was loud and we were stoned

7
we don't know santana or richie havens – where are we gonna sleep ?
but i know we'll get it done
this weekend is hauntingly surreal - something tells me not to worry
just have fun fun fun

8
so much happened by saturday morning - i lost ray and c e smann
sometime in the night
one thing kept me from worrying then - smiling lilah
and she made everything all right

9
she came there - with a handful of people from connecticut
on an old school vehicle ripe with rust
we spent some time down there - while the who was singing
i want it, i want it, I want it .. i got it - at the magic bus

10
now it's me and smiling lilah - all day saturday
no doubt i sacrificed my soul
the music was great - continuously beating in the background
rumbling down by the washin' hole

repeat chorus

11
we did it all all day - she was calling me smiling larry
her volunteer
i never had this much fun - in just 24 hours
my whole life plan seemed clear

12
but as much as i liked lilah - she just wasn't a part
of my destiny and future plan
coming down - i put my priorities in order

gotta find ray and c e smann if i can

13
saturday night - say no to more drugs
but lilah's brother has some jack daniels, black label
so now here i am - i've run the gamut
passed out in a horse stable

14
as sunday morning's headache - wakes me at dawn
i find i'm plain worn out
but there's something new - lilah says it’s speed
rrr rrr rrrrrr rrrrrr rrrrrrrr - far out

15
sunday's breakfast - has been put on hold
but the music carries on
lilah's talking about me - coming back to connecticut
but lord i'm going home

repeat chorus

16
somehow ray and c e smann find me - talking in tent city
their promise to find me was vowed
i show them lilah - and she goes on about me
a different me emerges from that crowd

17
in 48 hours - the line has been drawn
right down the middle of the road
psychedelic surprise - the good old boys are splitting in two
as i develop a new code

18
so there you have it - three dudes go to woodstock
one an unlikely show
but some mind altering later - funny how it happens
that was the one who had to go

19
boys talking trash - on their way home
two say it was quite a whim
one is thinking of lilah - and what's to come
and what the army will do to him

20
i can tell you now - i didn't need that festival
to make me who i am
but it's funny how it guided me - to be who i am
20 years later as a man

chorus (3x) - out

Dear Blog

Monday July 21, 2008

Dear Blog

Well, this past Wednesday, I noticed that I had inherited the annual ‘itch’, once again. No, I’m not talking about a contagious disease nor am I referring to a wool article of clothing that has been laid aside since last Winter. No, neither of these two triflings are, now, on my mind.
What is tickling my fancy is something known as a Fantasy .. and I must stop you, immediately, in your perverted thought process.
My mind is, now, entertaining the popular American ‘pastime’.
Yes, it’s Fantasy Football !
This will be my 20th year playing (and gambling on) NFL Football weekly results. It is the most fun and entertaining game that I have ever played.
The main League that I am a member of, currently, is known as the F U Fantasy Football League. The F U is but a mere play on words .. or letters, as it were. It actually stands for Fantasy Ultimate.

Let me give you a thumbnail of our League: We have 10 franchises which my FishHead II team is one. We will have a card draw before the Season starts to determine the order of our Players’ Draft. We will, each, select 18 Players by a serpentine order. Each week, we select 10 of these to be our ‘starting LineUp’. They will consist of 1 Quarterback, 2 Running Backs, 3 Wide Receivers, 1 Tight End, 1 Kicker, 1 Defense/Special Team .. and 1 Wild Card which can be a RB, a WR or a TE.
These players stats for that week will translate into points for our team.
Our 10 teams will be divided into 2 Divisions called the Pros and Cons. We will play Head to Head games; 2 each verses the other 4 teams in our Division .. and 1 each against the 5 teams in the other Division. That equates to 13 Regular Season games. The winner of each Division receives a Bye during the following week’s Playoffs .. while the 2nd & 3rd place teams in each Division play each other. Then, those 4 will play the following week to get 2 teams for a Championship game that plays during the NFL 16th week.
Points for each position are predetermined. A QB will receive 4 points for each TD Pass he throws .. 6 points if he Rushes for a TD. He will, also, receive 1 point for each 20 yards of passing that he throws for. He will be deducted 1 point for any Fumble he makes and 1 point for any Interception he throws.
A RB receives 6 points for any TD he Rushes for .. and 5 for any TD pass he receives. He will gain 1 point for every 10 yards of Offense he accures. A Fumble will deduct 1 point.
A WR will receive 5 points for any TD pass he receives and the other RB points will be the same for the WR.
A kicker will receive 1 point for every Point After TD he kicks. He will receive 3 points for a Field Goal of up to 39 yards, 4 points for a FG of up to 49 yards, 5 points for a FG of up to 59 yards .. and 6 points of any FG of 60 yards or longer. A missed FG of 39 yards or less deducts 2 points and a missed FG of 49 and under is minus 1 point.
The D/ST get 6 points for any TD scored and 1 for each Int., Sack or Fumble Recovery. A Safety is 3 points. Points are deducted for total yards and points given up, as well.

Last year I missed winning the League Championship (and a thousand bucks) when Tampa Bay scored their first ever ST TD in their history .. by a guy named Michael Spurlock ! Go figure. L L
Still, I pocketed $ 600. J

The Washington Redskins opened Training Camp in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday July 20, 2008.
During the morning practice, DE Philip Daniels tore his ACL and will be lost for the entire Season. ESPN is reporting that the Redskins have contacted the Miami Dolphins about a Trade for their disgruntled DE, Jason Taylor. Let’s hope that materializes.
* Note: The Trade is done. The Redskins will give Miami a 2009 2nd round Draft pick and a 2010 6th rounder for the 11 year veteran. That’s a bit steep .. but I’m down with it. Done deal.

Now, Baseball: The Nats only played 3 games this week due to Tuesday’s boring All-Star game. In Atlanta verses the Braves where they won 2 of 3 games, they won Sunday, 15-6 after winning on Saturday, 8-2.
Third Baseman and star player, Ryan Zimmerman will return from injury this Tuesday in San Francisco where the Nats open a series with the Giants. They will travel to Los Angeles for a series with the Dodgers after that.

NASCAR did not present a Sprint Cup race, this week-end. Although, on Saturday night in St. Louis, they did schedule a Nationwide Series race.
Many of the industry’s most prolific Drivers did not perform in this event. One who did, though, was Roush Fenway’s Carl Edwards. Carl maneuvered his Ford into the Winner’s Circle by passing several cars during a wreck near the conclusion of the race and, then, held off several cars to win the 300 lap race.
Joe Gibbs Racing’s Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin did not participate .. but the team’s new 18 year old protégé, Joey ‘sliced bread’ Logano finished 2nd .. and Jason Keller (who has signed with JGR for 2009) finished 3rd.

The next NASCAR Race will be the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 27.

And as reported in this Blog, last week – I did not travel to Key West to live full-time .. but I will fly there, soon .. to chill out while waiting on my future living abode decisions. I will not report that trip, here, as it may cause further delay in my change of address.
Enough said !

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 90 degrees with a Relative Humidity of only 75 %.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 96 degrees but with a Relative Humidity of 94 %.

Okay, thanks for dropping by this Blog, today.
I hope to see you, tomorrow, for amateur Lyricist day at this URL.

Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show

Friday July 18, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

My Dad was no Yogi .. but he said some funny stuff …

Beatles on Ed Sullivan Show

The date was Sunday; February 9, 1964. The Beatles were playing their American television debut on the vastly popular, American TV program, the Ed Sullivan Show.

It was the single most important day in the history of music. There were over 50,000 requests for tickets in a Theatre that held 703 Guests.
Most of America came to a standstill that night as 73 million viewers tuned in. That is nearly three times the number of viewers who watched the highest rated Survivor TV program.

The Beatles sang the Lennon/McCartney songs, All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There, and I Want To Hold Your Hand on the show.
One week later, they performed on the show again although it was recorded from a Miami Beach Hotel. They performed She Loves You, This Boy, All My Loving, I Saw Her Standing There, From Me To You and I Want To Hold Your Hand.

The 3rd televised Sullivan performance came on February 23, 1964. Technically, this was their first performance, because the Beatles recorded this performance on February 9, 1964, before their historical ‘first’ appearance. This program was taped that afternoon for airing three Sundays later. The Beatles played three songs, Twist and Shout, Please Please Me, and I Want To Hold Your Hand.

On Sunday, May 24, 1964, the Ed Sullivan Show broadcast an interview that Ed had with the Beatles, where they talked about their new movie, "A Hard Day's Night." And with this interview was a tape of the Beatles singing, You Can't Do That, from the movie.

When the Beatles came back to America in 1965, and while preparing for their famous concert at Shea Stadium in New York, they taped six songs on August 14, to be aired on the Sullivan Show on September 12, 1965. The Beatles played six songs; I Feel Fine, I'm Down , Ticket To Ride, Yesterday, Help and finally Ringo was allowed to vocalize his talents by singing the Country tune, Act Naturally which had been made famous by the legendary recording artist, Buck Owens. Although taped, this would be the last "live" performance the Beatles did for the Ed Sullivan Show.
But, the Beatles still appeared a few more times, after that, via tape.

But I want to concentrate on that September 12, 1965 show.
I had just begun my Sophomore year at Herndon High School. I had been an avid music aficionado since I was three years old and I had watched all of the Beatles’ performances on Ed Sullivan.
My Dad and I watched that telecast together in the Living Room of our modest Herndon, Virginia home .. on Jonquil Lane. I was the youngest of five children so my Dad was an older man, at the time. Still, even though my Dad seemed like an old fuddy-duddy in most things – he enjoyed ‘young peoples music’ .. as well as his favorite ‘Hillbilly’ stuff. I remember him listening to my older Siblings’ Rock’n’Roll records when they were played, around the house. He even mimicked some of the lyrics.

On this night, the Sullivan Show, which aired between 8 and 9 PM was delayed by about 10 minutes due to an old American Football League game that went long.
Usually, my Dad would leave our house at 9 PM to go pick up my Mother who worked at Dulles International Airport. Her shift ended at 9:30 PM.
But when 9 PM came, my Dad stayed in his old red rocking chair. I asked why he wasn’t going to pick up Mom. He said he wanted to stay and watch ol’ Ringo sing his song.
Sure enough, at the end of the Ed Sullivan Show, the Beatles closed with Ringo singing the Buck Owens classic, Act Naturally.

When the song .. and the show ended, my Dad got up and grabbed his hat and went out the front door to pick up my Mom. As he disappeared through the doorway, he looked back at me and remarked,
“You know .. ol’ Ringo ain’t such a bad singer –
BUT HE AIN’T NO BUCK OWENS !”

I laughed then .. and I laugh every time I remember that remark, from that night.

My Dad was no Yogi .. but he said some funny stuff …

Pancho & Lefty

Thursday; July 17, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Popularized by Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard in 1983

Written in 1972 by:
Townes Van Zandt

Pancho & Lefty

Living on the road my friend
was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
and your breath's as hard as kerosene
You weren't your mama's only boy
but her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
and sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boy
his horse was fast as polished steel
He wore his gun outside his pants
for all the honest world to feel
Pancho met his match you know
on the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dyin' words
ah but that's the way it goes

All the Federals say
they could've had him any day
They only let him slip away
out of kindness I suppose
Lefty he can't sing the blues
all night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
ended up in Lefty's mouth
Day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
there ain't nobody knows

All the Federals say
they could've had him any day
We only let him slip away
out of kindness I suppose

[ guitar Bridge]

The poets tell how Pancho fell
and Lefty's living in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
and so the story ends we're told
Pancho needs your prayers it's true
but save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do
and now he's growing old
( All the Federals say
they could've had him any day )
We only let him go so long
out of kindness I suppose
A few great Federals say
could've had him any day
We only let him go so long
out of kindness I suppose

Editor’s Note:

Pancho and Lefty is a folk song written by Townes Van Zandt.
Van Zandt first recorded it for his 1972 album, ‘The Late Great Townes Van Zandt’. Emmylou Harris then covered the song for her 1977 album, ‘Luxury Liner’ and the song became a number one Country hit in 1983 when Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson adopted it as the title track of their duet album ‘Pancho & Lefty’.
The song tells the story of a Mexican bandit named Pancho and a more enigmatic character, Lefty. The song tells of Pancho's death and implies that he was betrayed by his associate Lefty who was paid off by the Mexican Federales.
Although many people, initially, assume that the song is about the famous Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, Van Zandt has denied this, and the lyrics are not easily reconciled with the historic details of Villa's life and death.

Lesser known ‘covers’ of this tune were recorded by Hoyt Axton, Bob Dylan, Storyhill, Dick Gaughan, Delbert McClinton, Old & In The Way, Todd Menton, Richard Dobson and Gillian Welsh & David Rawlings.

I am currently working on a 2nd Book entitled The Island that I am about 1/2 the way towards completion, at this date.
I have decided to, occasionally, post excerpts from 5500 Years From Home in this Blog space.

Today, we peruse the 1985 set up song.

5500 years from home

1
recent memory identifies
spinning through gravitational skys
instruments misreading data base
collapsed star sucking all of the space
static reactor crashes to the ground
atmospheric qualities have been found

1a
i am so afraid
i don't know what land i have found
i am so afraid
i've got to get out on the ground
i am so afraid
i've got to have a look around

2
as i crawl away from the crash
my life could end in a flash
strange creatures are surrounding me
i' m loosing all my energy
and now there is nothing i can do
they have me - i'm through

2b
i am so lonely
far far away from my home
i am so lonely
lying on a table made of chrome
i am so lonely
lying under this lighted dome

3
my eyes are blurred but i plainly see
i'm in a room marked m.d.
my body seems to be intact
although there's pain in my back
a calendar shows december 1998
which surely describes my ultimate fate

3c
i am lost
5500 years from my time
i am lost
from the year 7499
i am lost
in 1999

when i’m released

when i’m released
i’ll roam about
round ‘n’ round
in and out

like a lightning bug
at night
i’ll disappear
then reignite

time and space
know no bounds
mysteriously haunting
hallowed grounds

witnessing
in seventeen ninety-one
a meeting house building
just begun

eternal seconds
parallel four score
farms, families, schools
and the civil war

still nearly a century
would pass on by
before all heard
my very first cry

from then til now
i must admit
seemed an eternity
i never quit

until my name
called aloud
by reaper grim
in his coal-black shroud

and once i am
pronounced deceased
my soul will roam
when i’m released

Dear Blog

Monday July 14, 2008

Dear Blog

On Saturday evening, I attended the Washington Nationals Baseball game vs. the Houston Astros at the new Nationals Park in SouthEast Washington, D.C.
My longtime friend, Ruby Eastham, received 3 free passes from her part-time employer, CH2M Hill .. and invited me and my Daughter, Brittny. Ruby, also, acquired free Metro access for us.
Ruby picked us up at my Daughter’s house around 4:20 PM in her fire red, 2007 Mustang convertible (top down). We arrived at the Vienna Metro shortly before 5:00 and within just a few minutes, we were aboard the Orange Line hurtling towards the L’Enfant Plaza Station where we would transfer to the Green Line. Once we changed Trains, it was just 2 stops until we arrived at the Navy Yard where Nationals Park was just a half block walk away.
We, then, entered the Park through the Centerfield Gate and after grabbing some drinks and snacks – we settled into our Upper Infield Gallery seats (3rd Base and shade side) at around 6:15 PM for the 7:00 (7:15) game starting time.
The Park is just as beautifully exquisite as advertised and I don’t want to go on record with any negative comments BUT .. I’m disappointed that the Capitol AND the Washington Monument are not visible in the skyline beyond the Outfield Home Run fences.
Enough said.
Now, the game: the Nats lost 6-4 in a close contest that they had every chance to win. They, now, have the worst Won-Loss record in the entire Major Leagues. Over this past week, the Nationals won only 2 of 6 games.

As far as the Metro experience – the Train was sparse when we boarded it in Vienna and added patrons as the stops accumulated. By the last few stops before the transfer, the seats were completely filled and people were standing. Upon, subsequently, boarding the Green Line Train – it was very crowded and the 3 of us stood along with many others. It was less than a 10 minute ride (or stand) to the Navy Yard.
Coming home after the game – it was a cattle call from the Park to the Metro and to the Trains. The Green Line shuttle to L’Enfant Plaza was packed more so than Sardines. But when we switched to the Orange Line back to Vienna, the Train car we were in wasn’t even 20 % filled.
I think, in the future that I’d drive and pay the $ 20 to park .. but that’s just me.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch (23 years old), AGAIN, won this week’s NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Race. Amazingly, he, also, won the Friday night Nationwide Series Race. He has won 3 of the last 4 Sprint Cup Races and, now, 7 in total, this year.
Jimmie Johnson finished 2nd and Kevin Harvick finished 3rd.
Tony Stewart finished 5th as he finishes out the year in the Joe Gibbs Racing stable. Tony is buying an interest in Haas Racing and will be an Owner / Driver starting in 2009.
Denny Hamlin was wrecked in the last 4 laps and finished 40th.
The next NASCAR Race will be the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, July 27.

Then, on Sunday I was supposed to travel to Key West, Florida via Delta Air. It did not happen ! Aaarrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !
This was the 4th time that I was to travel back to the Island to set up my Working Vacation / Retirement at the Atlantic Shores Resort.
If it’s not Worker’s Compensation – it’s the Insurance company – and if it’s not them, it’s the Courts. Now it’s the Corporation that intends to hire me as an Onsite Overseer / Manager. I fear that I shall die (or run out of money) before I can completely relocate for my final Earthly years.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 86 degrees with a Relative Humidity of only 73 %. There is the chance of afternoon Thunderstorms.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 85 degrees but with a Relative Humidity of 95 %. Early morning rain is expected.

Okay, thanks for dropping by this Blog, today.
I hope to see you, tomorrow, for amateur Lyricist day at this URL.

Concert for George

Friday July 11, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Eric Clapton’s finest work on:

CONCERT FOR GEORGE

November 29, 2002 - Royal Albert Hall, London, England

Exactly one year to the day, after the untimely death of Rock Legend and ex-Beatle, George Harrison, friends and family gathered to put on a tribute show given the simple title of 'Concert for George'. Surely, in rememberence of Harrison’s 1971 all-star show in Madison Square Garden in New York city styled 'Concert For Bangladesh'.

The show opens with a performance from the band of Ravi Shankar, Harrison’s longtime idol. Led by his daughter Anoushka Shankar - the elder Shankar doesn’t play nor sing but we get a couple of Shankar penned tunes as well as George’s The Inner Light.
Eric Clapton (who was Musical Director) and Jeff Lynne accompany the Indian musicians on a few numbers.

The next segment features Monty Python doing some of their famous bits with the help of actor Tom Hanks who is a big fan of both Python and Harrison. Harrison loved the Pythons, which is why they show up here.

Matters heighten with the arrival of an unusual source: essentially forgotten musician Joe Brown. Joe was one of Brian Epstein’s contractual performers during the Beatles very early European show dates. He does George’s Here Comes the Sun and That’s The Way It Goes with some of his old band mates. The latter song employs Andy Fairweather-Low on the Electric Slide Guitar. For my money, this exquisite Guitar Piece is as beautiful as any music ever written.
Why not check it out for yourself ..

Soon after, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers bring some excitement to their numbers, on the George written Beatles song, Taxman .. and a Traveling Wilbury’s song, Handle With Care. This song was primarily written by Harrison along with Petty, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynn and Roy Orbison.
After that, Clapton and Billy Preston team up for maybe the best song of the evening, Isn’t It A Pity.

The crowd, then, was treated to two songs by ex-Beatle and fan favorite, Ringo Starr .. Photograph which he co-wrote with George and one of George’s idols, Carl Perkins’ tune, Honey Don’t. Ringo, then, climbed up behind his Drum Kit and remained there throughout the remaining acts.

Paul McCartney enters the stage and performs three of George’s Beatles songs; For You Blue, All Things Must Pass and Something – then remains onstage to finish out the show.

Jools Holland (who teamed with George on his last CD, ‘Brainwashed’ with Horse To The Water ) is introduced along with Joe Brown’s daughter, Sam Brown, to perform that tune.
Procol Harum’s - Gary Brooker knocks out a delightful and soulful rendition of George’s Beatles song, Old Brown Shoe.

Other songs performed were Your Eyes, Give Me Love, I Need You, Beware Of Darkness and Wah Wah.
George’s son, Dhani Harrison plays Rhythm (Hollow Body) Guitar and sings backup during the entire show.

Other musicians include: Dave Bronze (Bass), Jim Capaldi (Drums), Ray Cooper (Percussion), Jim Horn (Sax), Jim Keltner (Drums), Albert Lee (Guitar), Marc Mann (Guitar) and Tessa Niles (backing Vocals).

THIS show is my favorite all-time musical performance. The reason is that George Harrison is my favorite all-time Entertainer .. with Eric Clapton, my 2nd.
Plus, the music is GREAT !

I would recommend that anyone / everyone purchase this DVD. It’s less than $ 20 online and will give you years of fabulous listening and wonderful memories.

Double Dippin'

Written for Thursday; July 10, 2008
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

DOUBLE DIPPIN’

Today, we’re going to review two Songs by two separate Groups that are truly worthy of the term: SuperGroup !
Both of these Bands began their assault on Rock Music in the late 1960s and, both, found their greatest successes in the late 60s thru the mid 70s.
And even though I’ve enjoyed every Song that they recorded during that time frame - my favorite Tunes that they, both, put on Wax were 1980s material.

First, let’s take a look / listen to a Live version of:

Southern Cross by: Crosby, Stills & Nash
written by Stephen Stills

Got out of town on a boat goin' to southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete Bay
Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline
Nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world
Lookin' for that woman, girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will (and you know it will)

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
'Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day
So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a-dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a-flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name

Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me, larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten
I have been around the world
Lookin' for that woman, girl
Who knows love can endure
And you know it will (and you know it will)

So we cheated and we lied and we tested,
And we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do
You will survive being bested
But somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you
At the Southern Cross

Now let’s enjoy a retro Video of:

Your Wildest Dreams by Moody Blues
written by Justin Hayward

Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
I hear the sound I had to follow
Once upon a time

Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams

And when the music plays
And when the words are touched with sorrow
When the music plays
And when the music plays
I hear the soundI had to follow
Once upon a time

Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Mirrored in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams

Not bad, huh, people ?
No, not bad at all !
Not at all.

Now, go tell your Friends .. the way I have told you.

Well, go on .. go on .. be off with you, my lads and ladies.

5500 YEARS FROM HOME

People’s Church HYMN

Chapter 1 … Coventry … partial pages 2 & 3

After the sun had disappeared over his shoulder
And the cooling of the soil bathed his sore tired feet
He stopped to rest, his journey had not ended
After four moons had passed over the darkness
Exhausted by his travels, still his soul and mind felt good
He saw creation's hand around the fruit he was about to taste
And it was good, as he felt peace he knew he was
In perfect harmony, he knew he was ...

Just a part of the plan to understand all God's work
We're all a part of the plan that's man doing God's work
This is all a grand plan, planned grandly we're a part of His work

Whereupon darkness soon covered the land smothered in silence
As a warming fire sparkled upon the surrounding land
The weary traveler sleeps, he will travel all day
Until two more moons pass to reach his destination
He is the traveler and he is good doing his work
And as he lays in the angelic softness of a grassy meadow
He slumbers and all is still good all is peaceful
And he knew it was in perfect harmony and he knew he was ...

Just a part of the plan to understand all God's work
We're all a part of the plan that's man doing God's work
This is all a grand plan, planned grandly we're a part of His work

And as the sun peeks over the eastern horizon
The traveler has moved on without leaving a scar upon the land
He will come upon a wide waterway and climb many hills
Before eating berries God has grown for him
Because God is good
God is love
God loves all; the traveler loves God
And he travels God's land
God's land is good it's sustainable
And is used as such in perfect harmony and it is ...

Just a part of the plan to understand all God's work
We're all a part of the plan that's man doing God's work
This is all a grand plan, planned grandly we're a part of His work
