2004
larry curtis spurlock
when i’m released
when i’m released
i’ll roam about
round ‘n’ round
in and out
like a lightning bug
at night
i’ll disappear
then reignite
time and space
know no bounds
mysteriously haunting
hallowed grounds
witnessing
in seventeen ninety-one
a meeting house building
just begun
eternal seconds
parallel four score
farms, families, schools
and the civil war
still nearly a century
would pass on by
before all heard
my very first cry
from then til now
i must admit
seemed an eternity
i never quit
until my name
called aloud
by reaper grim
in his coal-black shroud
and once i am
pronounced deceased
my soul will roam
when i’m released
