The Radio D.J.
Babbling In Between Songs

I wonder if this is what started the Radio Shock-Jock. It got hundreds of phone calls into the Radio Station .. and thousands of laughs from the Listeners. All innocent and unplanned babble.

What was it ? Well, the year was 1979 .. and I was traveling to Work one morning .. in the Washington, D.C. area. I don’t even remember what Radio station I was listening to nor whom the DJ was.

The D.C. area has always been crazy about the (NFL team) Redskins. And the D.J. was killing time in between songs by giving the time and temperature .. and a quickie info piece on the Redskins .. since it was Football Season.

Let me give you some information available at that time. The Redskins had a huge Defensive Tackle by the name of Dave Butz who had been on the team for years. Butz had his foot stepped on, near the end of the last game and his availability was uncertain for this next game.
The Redskins Defensive Backfield had been suspect the previous year and so they had acquired Safety, Tony Peters in a Trade with the Cleveland Browns just before the Season had begun. Tony had been plagued with Hamstring problems ever since he had arrived. Some games – he played. Others – he didn’t.

Now .. back to the Radio DJ. THIS is what I remember hearing, that morning .. coming out of a commercial break …

“ Hey, everybody. Welcome back – it’s 6:45 AM .. and 56 degrees in the City.
How about those Redskins ! Huh ? ..
A few of our boys are bit nicked, though.
Injuries can slow a team down .. but in talkin’ with Head Coach, Jack Pardee – we have learned that, this week, although the Redskins won’t be playing with their Butz – they will be playing with their Peters !

Now, here’s the new tune by the Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star. “
