5500 YEARS FROM HOME

chapter Fourteen … page 128

Clark Repaid

After daydreaming for far longer than he had planned, Thom headed back over to the Oxford Road area of Milford. By the time that he encountered the dead end circle, he could hear the sound of the lawnmower as his earlier self was mowing Ms. Stinson’s grass. Soon enough, Thom saw the Police Cruiser coming up the Road. He knew that with the snafu ironed out at Clark’s Drugstore, that the authorities were not looking for him but with him mowing Ms. Stinson’s grass in the exact same clothes that stood out, being 42 years from the future, Thom ducked down behind some bushes and scrubs. As the Cruiser made the turn at the circle and slowly drove back down to the front of Ms. Stinson’s house, Thom waited for them to knock at Ms. Stinson’s door and for them to retreat to the rear of her home.
.
Then, Thom raced back down there just as his previous self was running away from her front yard. Thom had left the mower running, earlier, although he had completed the mowing operation. Once he reached Ms. Stinson’s house, he saw Ms. Stinson, his father and the two Policemen enter his family’s house’s side door. Thom shut off the mower and pushed it to the back of the house where he had seen a garden hose and began to wash the mower’s undercarriage out. Then, he returned the mower to the shed in his family’s back yard.
The task was done and he, now, could leave with a clear conscious.
.
By then, Ms. Stinson came out of Thom’s family house and met with Thom at her back porch. She apologized to Thom for her absence and asked him inside so that she could pay him. Once inside, she told Thom that the Police knew the Martin’s, next door and had come to see their new born baby. She then, took a pot of coffee off the stove and poured herself and Thom a cup. Still, mistakenly thinking Thom was her new Gardner, she allowed that he (Thom) took sugar and cream in his coffee and added it as she spoke.
.
… as his previous self was running away ..
