i went to key west
one
i went to key west
a long time ago
in 29 years
it’s still a cool place to go
lot of things have changed
but most have stayed the same
although the rich man’s come
playing the buying up game
they still have chickens
and kitty cats and gays
money’s buying up the sand
but it can’t buy the rays
you can still have fun
but it’s not for free
unless you drink tap water
under a coca nut tree
unless you drink tap water
under a coca nut tree
two
i went to key west
another time or two
in ’81 & ‘85
the old becoming new
but for the next 18 years
i didn’t get to play
so i flew to miami
and drove back down a-1-a
old town is calling
calling into my ear
to have a conch burger
and a cold draught beer
i don’t mind it wild
but i’m slowing down
i like to live southernmost
and walk downtown
i like to live southernmost
and walk downtown
three
i went to key west
just a week ago
god have things changed
but i still love to go
it still has it’s charm
as the money rolls in
squeezing out the locals
you just can’t win
duval street is no secret
and the atmosphere’s bizarre
the sun always shines brightly
in key west who needs a car
pat dailey is still singing
at sloppy joe’s bar & grill
though he won’t sing jimmy or willie
he’ll still give you a thrill
though he won’t sing jimmy or willie
he’ll still give you a thrill
four
i’ve been to key west
9 times in the hood
and the next time i go there
i’ll be living there for good
going for a visit
is getting too expensive
so i’ll run a resort
as a retirement venture
now i’ll be a conch
and i’ll tell you about
the old flagler railroad
and the bar jimmy buffett was thrown out
i’ll be so tanned
complimenting the grey
every day i’ll have a smile
a smile for every day
every day i’ll have a smile
a smile for every day
( repeat one )
( repeat four )
