Dear Blog

My friend Siouxsie lives at the Southern Cross Hotel on Duval Street in Key West, Florida.
Siouxsie plays Guitar & sings at many of the nearby local Waterin’ Holes.
Here’s what she reported happening this past week:
There’s a large fluffy black cat that resides on the premises of the Southern Cross. He does not belong to any one person but has patroled the grounds, there for many years. He is sometimes seen entering and exiting a crawl space under the Realty firm that sits adjacent to the walkway leading to the Cabanas on the rear of the Southern Cross’ property.
He is affectionately known to the island’s locals as Buckwheat.

Buckwheat has been known to meander around some of the nearby establishments and even walk right into Sloppy Joe’s Bar & Grille and Hog’s Breath Saloon and Flying Monkeys as well as some other places.
He is often offered food such as Tuna, etc. but almost never partakes. He just walks around as if looking for somebody but rarely stays in one place very long.

This past week, several days passed without Buckwheat being seen. That was strange as he is observed nearly every day at some point at some time. Many locals as well as Hotels guests began a search for Buckwheat. It was strange because nobody wanted to find him lying in the street after being hit by a car or him meeting an otherwise, untimely fate.

Then, on Tuesday, a call came to the Southern Cross from a worker at Key West International Airport. The man said a strange occurance took place on Monday evening. It seems that a couple had tried to smuggle a cat onto a flight. That was rediculous because you can’t even smuggle a 3 ounce container of liquid onto a plane. But what was more astounding was when the bag was opened by security, a black cat jumped out and raced from the area. Even more strange was the fact that the couple did not even chase after the cat nor did they file a report or even ask for any help.
The cat had scurried not only out the door of the Terminal but was last spotted scampering off the parking lot and disappearing into the thicket out by the Salt Pond.

Soon, the word spread throughabout the workers at the Airport and finally one of them mentioned that there’s a black cat that hangs out at the Southern Cross. Obviously, it was Buckwheat but where was he, now.
A few Southern Cross employees made some signs saying LOST LARGE BLACK CAT with the Hotel’s phone number and placed them near the Airport even down by the nearby High School. Then, several other signs were posted around town in store windows and on street signs.
It didn’t take long before the first call came in. Buckwheat was seen crossing Flagler Avenue and dashing into a home’s back yard. Then, another call witnessing a black cat near Washington and Leon Streets.
But after that, there were no calls for more than a day and a half until a woman called saying that she’d seen a black cat and a rooster hiding under an old shed on Florida Street. A Southern Cross employee was dispatched to the location but when he arrived, he found the rooster but no cat. Another day passed without any calls nor sightings. But late Friday afternoon, a man came by the Southern Cross and reported seeing a black cat on the Key West Cemetary lawn. When someone hustled over there, no cat was found.

Saturday was a sad day as a Key West Policeman came by the Hotel and notified everyone there that a black cat had been found lying on a James Street corner after being hit by a truck. The Manager on duty at the Southern Cross asked the Policeman if they could come get the cat so they could bury it on the Hotel grounds. They were told that Key West policy was that the cat had to be medically inspected for any diseases or poisoning in it’s stomach and then incinerated at the Stock Island infirmary.

On Saturday night, several Hotel workers passed out candles to be lit in Buckwheat’s honor. Many of the guest rooms had a candle burning at the doorstep until quite late.

Now, as Siouxsie tells it, she awakened Sunday morning to go over to St Paul’s Church to say a prayer for Buckwheat and as she walked up the path from her Suite towards Duval Street, she stopped momentarily at the opening to the Realty companies crawl space to remember all those mornings when she would see Buckwheat slip out into the sunshine.
Shockingly, as she stood there – a big fat black cat shimmed his way out and meoed as it rubbed agauinst her leg. It was, indeed Buckwheat and the poor cat at James Street was not.
Siouxsie cried and let out a yell and announced that Buckwheat was back and as fat as ever. Within a few minutes, as many as 25 people were dancing and singing and as grateful as could be.
Buckwheat had traversed nearly 4 miles and about 35 blocks crossing streets and alleys and within 7 days had found his way back home .. even though he had been taken inside some bag where he could not see where he was going.

Buckwheat was home .. and quite honestly, could not see the reason for all the people making such racket on a, normally, peaceful Sunday morning on his island of Key West, Florida.

The Washington Redskins .. were beaten by the Dallas Cowbabies last night, 14-10.
I am too pissed off to file a report, today. Maybe next week but I tell you this, my friends – Jason Campbell IS NOT the Quarterback to lead this team deep into any NFL Playoffs or Super Bowl.
I’d suggest signing New England’s QB, Matt Cassell to a contract, this off season. Tom Brady will be back, next year and NE cannot afford to keep them, both. Plus Cassell will be Free Agent at season’s conclusion.

Auto Racing:
Jimmie Johnson won NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series 2008 Championship !

NHL:
The Washington Capitals have a record of 10 – 4 – 3 .. and in 1st place in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League.

NBA:
The Washington Bullets have a record of 1 – 6 and are in last place in the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association.

Rascal is, still, doing well on her Rimadyl medication.
Stimey, the cat is, also, well .. although he is not under medication. He just feels left out if I don’t mention him, too.

Today in Key West, the high air temperature is predicted to be 70 degrees with a overnight low of 61 degrees.
Today’s LoCo weather forecast calls for air temperatures of 50 degrees and with an overnight low of 29 degrees.
