hedrick

chorus
you can’t see both sides
unless you cross the bridge
you won’t have the broader view
until you top the ridge

and if you’re looking for paradise
check your rear-view mirror
a clear vision of the past
can make the future look clearer

and if you’re looking for paradise
hallelujah in the sky
wear your heart upon your sleeve
and keep your eye on the prize

verse 1
they came from another shore
on the ‘robert & alice’ sail
into the port at philadelphia
then wagoned down the great valley trail

they crossed the rappahannock river
and forded the potomac and the james
through big walker mountain pass
to the town that george wythe named

and there they lived their lives
as the descendants came
to build a heritage
on their new world claim

(repeat) chorus

verse 2
now jefferson begat peter
and peter begat george
and george married elizabeth davenport
and they moved into the powell valley gorge

a little place on cane creek
what was to become ben hur
where george preached his sermons
and elizabeth would concur

then john begat peter 2
and peter 2 begat g.w.
g.w. married nancy ledford
and they moved to harlan, kentucky

(repeat) chorus

verse 3
g.w. and nancy raised 16 children
then moved back to v.a.
where they bought a house and 100 acres
known as the old bishop place

and that’s where they resided
with all their family as one
i visit with them occasionally
when i’m at bethel on sugar run

then came henderson hedrick
and lizzie ledford as his wife
i know i’m not the only one
who owes to them my life

(repeat) chorus)
