Behind Closed Doors

Written by Kenny O’Dell
and performed by Charlie Rich
( December 14, 1932 - July 25, 1995 )

My baby makes me proud
Lord, don't she make me proud
She never makes a scene
By hanging all over me in a crowd

'Cause people like to talk
Lord, don't they love to talk
But when they turn out the lights
I know she'll be leaving with me

And when we get behind closed doors
Then she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
Oh, no-one knows what goes on behind closed doors

My baby makes me smile
Lord, don't she make me smile
She's never far away
Or too tired to say: "I want you"

She's always a lady,
just like a lady should be
But when they turn out the lights
She's still a baby to me'

Cause when we get behind closed doors
Then she lets her hair hang down
And she makes me glad that I'm a man
Oh, no-one knows what goes on behind closed doors

Behind closed doors

chapter Ten … page 85

Record Intact
.
And once again, the Orb was drifting in time. Thom was coherent and trying desperately not to conjure up any thoughts that would guide the ship. Each time the EOB was forced to facilitate an emergency departure, his mental strength was losing stored vitality.
.
Still, the EOB would not deny Thom the ability to exit the Orb in any of it’s arrival locations. It would be inhumane to incarcerate Thom in such a small compartment while the EOB extracted energy from the newer and ever-changing atmosphere. While aboard the craft, it is indiscernible whether time is moving backwards, forwards or just remaining current. Regardless, the EOB falls into a coma like trance and it’s impossible for Thom not to meditate unconsciously, as well.
.
Streaking across the timescale, both Orb occupants are without conscious volition. The EOB is totally without contemplation. Thom, on the other hand, has uncontrollable mental cognizance while in slumber. His faculties display subliminal visions of past experiences. For instance, there was the trip to St. Louis in September 1998 where he and his co-workers from AP Publications witnessed Mark McGwire’s then record breaking 62nd Major League Baseball’s Home Run. Also, passing through Thom’s memory was his overnight stay in Brighton, Massachusetts while attending the Wedding of Audrey’s younger sister in 2003.
.
Once, the humming and near rumbling commenced, both the circa 2008 and 7508 humanoids were aware that a termination date had been obtained. A port was reached and a maneuver secured. And as previously experienced, an inaudible quiet resumed. An eerily hush alerted both that there was no more movement to be expected. All that was left was for the location to be ascertained. Since the EOB was not at full mental capacity, his sensory perception did not provide that redress. It would be, once again, up to Thom to explore and provide that information. The visual was of a warehouse enclosure.

… Streaking across the timescale ..

summer friend

1-8
summer friend
waffs into my place
singing songs
dancing the night away
she acts like
she owns the whole place
i think i'll play with her, today
i think i'll play with her

9-16
alluring desire
to massage her piggie toes
moist lips
my mind slips away
i think she
fell off the rainbow
and landed her by me, today
she landed here by me

hook 1
every morning for a week
she just laid in bed
i hung around mesmerized
by every word she said

17-24
she comes
from the sunshine state
that explains
her warm eerie glow
i think her
mama don't think she's great
but mama has to go, now
yes, mama has to go

25-32
kristina .. that is
her little girl
she says
we can be family
i don't know
about such a strange world
how can this be, tell me
how can this be

hook 2
on sunday, she spent
the whole day in my bed
she was getting pain medication
i was just getting ahead

33-40
i don't know
if she'll stay here
a week or a month
or even a year
but i'll keep on
waking up tomorrow
although tomorrow never comes, dear
tomorrow never comes

41-48
summer friend
wearing her white lace
personality
so close to mine
i can't let her
see my love face
cause love is blind, here
you know love is blind, dear

hook 3
i've spent every day
being her best friend
she's been so good to me
this is gonna be a hard one to end
it's gonna be a hard one to end, yeah

COSMO TOPPER

Friday May 22, 2009
*******************

Television’s
TOPPER
October 9, 1953 – September 30, 1955

78 total episodes; 30 minutes each in Black and White
on CBS, originally .. with Reruns on ABC and NBC.
Based on Thorne Smith's book
Topper Cast:
Leo G. Carroll as Cosmo Topper
Anne Jeffreys
as Marion Kerby
Robert Sterling
as George Kerby
Lee Patrick
as Henrietta Topper
( she was the GoodWitch Wanda in Wizard of Oz )
Thurston Hall as Mr. Schuyler
and Buck the dog as Neil

When I was a wee lad, I used to watch the Reruns of this TV show.
I enjoyed the show and understood most of it. The only problem that I had was that Ghosts George & Marion and their dog Neil were said to have been killed in an avalanche. Now, I didn’t know what an avalanche was .. but I did know what an ambulance was. And it made since that they died in an ambulance. :-)

Topper was a television situation comedy series based on the 1930s film series Topper.
The fat part of the story is that the fuddy old Cosmo Topper ( Leo G. Carroll ) is vice-president of a bank. He is married to the sweet but somewhat dumb Henrietta (Lee Patrick ). They live in a house in a Los Angeles suburb that they bought from the estate of a fashionable young couple, George and Marion Kerby ( Robert Sterling and Anne Jeffreys ), who died after being swept away by an avalanche. Their St. Bernard, Neil, who was unable to rescue them, also died with them. Cosmo finds that his house is haunted by their ghosts and that of their alcoholic St. Bernard. Only Cosmo can see or hear them.
( I loved this twist )

The ghosts try to put some excitement and joy into the life of the somewhat stodgy and conservative Cosmo. In action that would anticipate the later series Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie, the ghosts would cause strange ( but very humorous ) events to happen, for which Cosmo would have to create some kind of phony explanation to others who would be baffled, and often even amusingly frightened, by seeing them.

In later decades Topper would be popular in syndication. Some episodes are currently available on DVD.

Oh Girl

Thursday May 21, 2009
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Oh Girl

Written by Eugene Record
and performed by the Chi-Lites

Oh, girl
I’d be in trouble if you left me now
‘Cause I don’t know where to look for love
I just don’t know how

Oh, girl
How I depend on you
To give me love when I need it
Right on time you would always be

All my friends call me a fool
They say, “Let the woman take care of you"
So I try to be hip and think like the crowd
But even the crowd can’t help me now,
oh...oh...oh...oh...oh...oh...

Oh, girl
Tell me what am I gonna do
I know I’ve got a guilty face
Girl, I feel so out of place, oh, yeah...yeah...
Don’t know where to go, who to see, yeah

Oh, girl
I guess I better go
I can save myself a lot of useless tears
Girl, I’ve gotta get away from here

Oh, girl
Pain will double if you leave me now
‘Cause I don’t know where to look for love
And I don’t, I don’t know how

Oh, yeah
Mmm...hmm...

Oh, girl
Why do I love you so, yeah
Mmm...
Better be on my way, I can’t stay

Have you ever seen such a helpless man
Oh...oh...no...

Beatles’ Land

But it was quite a ways back and with loads of traffic in between. As the Cab neared the Airport, the Driver asked Thom which Airline he was traveling. Thom informed the Driver that he was to take the Air Freight roadway over to the water’s edge. Without a question, the Driver did just that. Now, with fewer cars in between, the Police car was within a quarter mile of the Cab.
.
Thom saw the meter at just over $ 18 when they passed by Pier 6. Thom handed the Cabbie three ten dollar bills and screamed to stop !
The Driver took the money and Thom jumped out with his Carry-All and ran towards the Bay. He could not believe that he was having to race away from trouble, yet again. By then, the Police car caught the Cab at which time one of the Officers jumped out with his weapon drawn and pointed Thom’s way. He yelled to Thom to stop but Thom ran all the way to water’s edge. Thinking that Thom was trapped, the Officer began walking in Thom’s direction.
.
Thom took one last step and leaped right into the water. He drifted down to where the Orb was positioned and into the craft. The EOB knew the drill and even though his mental capacity was not prepared to maneuver the vessel properly in a timely fashion, it disappeared from the watery deep and was off on a journey through time but again with no coordinates set. When the Police got to the water and looked down, they only saw where the Orb had been. It was gone.

… He yelled to Thom to stop ..

ELVIS PRESLEY

Monday May 18, 2009
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Two beautiful songs by:

ELVIS..PRESLEY

From the Blue Hawaii film

I’ve always been a pop music fan. As many of my BLOG readers know, I think the Beatles are the greatest pop band in the history of ever!
But before George, John, Paul & Ringo – my man was Elvis. And those of you who are familiar with the E-man knew he liked to have fun. The 32 films that he starred in were NOT fun for E.
He did them because his agent, Colonel Tom Parker explained that it would help the sales of his music LPs. And it did. Therefore, Elvis did not put forth the acting effort on many of his flicks if they were poorly written and produced.
But, his music spoke for itself.

A few notes on this film:

PLOT:
Chadwick Gates (Elvis Presley) has just gotten out of the Army, and is happy to be back in Hawaii with his surfboard, his beach buddies, and his girlfriend. His father wants him to go to work at the Great Southern Hawaiian Fruit Company, but Chad is reluctant. So Chad goes to work as a tour guide at his girlfriend's agency.

MORE:
Blue Hawaii (1961) was the first of three Elvis movies to be filmed in Hawaii, followed by Girls! Girls! Girls! in 1962 and Paradise, Hawaiian Style in 1965.

Angela Lansbury, who played the mother of Elvis, was not yet 36 years old in 1961 when the movie was released. Elvis was 26 years old, himself. Lansbury would later comment that her appearance here was one of the worst in her career.
It could be argued that this film set the tone for Presley's future film career: pretty locations, gorgeous girls, and mediocre acting. Almost all of these musical-comedy films performed well at the box office, whereas his more "serious" films such as Flaming Star, Wild in the Country and Charro, did poorly. Blue Hawaii on the other hand was one of Elvis' most successful films.

His recording of Can't Help Falling In Love compares quite well to his other Top 10 hits, and his recording Ku-u-ipo (Hawaiian Sweetheart) is notable as well.
The Blue Hawaii soundtrack album was on the Billboard Pop Albums chart for 79 weeks, spent 20 weeks at #1 on the Pop Albums chart, and sold more than 2-million copies. All back in the day.

I absolutely love both of these tunes and invite you to listen to them and view the video from the film by clicking the Links below.

In The Military
Communications Class: Viet Nam War era

Drill Sergeant: Now you Trainees listen up to the Class Instructor .. and do exactly as he says. No foolishness !

Class Instructor: Okay, men. This is the new modern communications device called the PRC 25. It weighs 20 pounds and you can talk on it to another PRC 25, up to 5 miles away. Now, when you’re talking on this device, you must obey certain fundamental laws of speech. So as not to be talking when someone else is talking, you must say OVER when you’re through speaking and are ready to listen to the other person speak. And when you are finished talking, altogether, and are not expecting a reply – you must say OUT ! Do you all understand this ? OVER. OUT. Got it ?

Class: (in unison) - YES DRILL SERGEANT !

Class Instructor: Okay, men. Good. Now, let’s have a demonstation. I need 2 men to show us a practical use demonstration. Eastham .. Spurlock .. get on up here. Now you 2 men show us what you’ve learned. And don’t talk all day !

Eastham: Help .. I’ve had an accident. I just turned my Jeep OVER !

Spurlock: Alright .. I’ll come down there and help you OUT.

Class Instructor: No, no, no, no, no, NO ! Go sit down !

Spurlock & Eastham: ?

I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better

Thursday May 14, 2009
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

I’ll Feel A Whole Lot Better

Written by Gene Clark
and performed by the Byrds

The reasons why
Oh I can say
I have to let you go, babe
And run away
After what you did
I can't stay on
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone

Baby for a long time
You had me believe
That your love was all mine
And that's the way it would be
But I didn't know
That you were putting me on
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone
Up when you're gone

Now I've got to say
That it's not like before
And I'm not going to play your games anymore
After what you did
I can't stay on
And I'll probably feel a whole lot better when you're gone
Up when you're gone
(x3)

Here the Byrds are seen lip syncing this tune on the TV show, Shivaree.
It was similar to Hullabaloo.

Beatles’ Land

She was unaware that Donnie had skipped School and been at JFK Airport on Friday. Thom didn’t elaborate further. He told her that his name was Martin and he was in room 616 at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan and that he would call back.
.
Thom then left the Hotel to sightsee around Manhattan. The earliest that he recalled ever being in the city was around 1980 when his parents took him and his brother to see the Broadway show, 42nd Street. He had certainly been back since but this was a good chance to see the attractions from an earlier circa. He lunched at an eatery and even strolled through Central Park. The Park was so clean and children were running around. Times had indeed changed.
.
When he returned to the Hotel around seven p.m., the Desk Clerk saw him and informed him that he had received a phone call and a subsequent message was left. Thom looked at the note to see that it was from Donnie Blasingame. Thom went to his room and returned the call. He apologized for dropping the dime on Donnie’s Airport adventure. He continued that he was a businessman in town by himself and had won two tickets to the Ed Sullivan Show, the next night. He said that if Donnie wanted one of the tickets, he could meet him at Studio 51 on west 53rd Street on Sunday night before the televised program began and Thom would return the Student voucher.
.
Donnie was elated and agreed, immediately. This was an earlier, safer time for youths and Donnie nor his family saw any problem with the arrangement. Especially at a place with so many other patrons around. Donnie’s mother and father would drop him off at the TV studio at 6:30 p.m. and have Dinner at a nearby Restaurant and be waiting for him when the show ended around 9:00-9:30. The remarkable thing about this was that Donnie had run into an old family friend at JFK Airport that Friday and was going to drive with him to his home in Washington, D.C. and see the Beatles, there, too.

… Thom then left the Hotel to sightsee around Manhattan ..

looney toons

5 18 224 nine
1992

larry..curtis..spurlock

looney toons

1st verse .. 1-12
once in a while magical things happen
like it did to me last june
honi took me riding in the foothills
on a horse she called looney toons

you see honi was catholic
and honi was quite young
she had all these silly notions
that the earth would come undone

me i was just slummin'
when they brushed the law in '93
she took that looney toons of hers
right in the sterling d. m. v.

hook .. 13-20
i called that girl a crazy loon
born with a silver spoon
she laughed and shot me the moon
and went riding off on looney toons

when everyone was partying at the dunes
where she called me a stupid goon
i thought i'd die real soon
til we went riding on looney toons

2nd verse .. 21-32
when we got out to the mountain
i had no idea where i stood
honi and all of her girlfriends
said my head was made of wood

they laughed until i almost cried
she called herself 'little sis'
and just when i thought she hated me
she woke me with a big fat kiss

but before i could get out of my sleeping bag
she was running for the stable yard
i stood there in my skivvies
as she rode looney toons so hard

(repeat) hook .. 33-40

3rd verse .. 41-52
on saturday we all went rafting
down shenendoah creek
honi was sitting on leon's lap
ga dam girl is killing me

just what does she want me to do
i have no idea in the world
her best friend cindi told me
boy, you're going to lose that girl

how can you lose what you haven't got
am i that dumb an ass
if i'm going to be a dumb ol ass
i'll be a dumb dumb ass with class

(repeat) hook .. 53 – 60

4th verse .. 61-72
so i'm not like eric clapton
no i'm not a dog who begs
unfortunately, i am a dog
who howls at honi's legs

if you kick a dog a couple of times
he'll surely start to roam
i put my tail between my legs
on sunday i was going home

i'm a quitter .. i give up
there's nothing more to do
i have memories of wild dreams
watching honi ride loony toons

(repeat) hook .. 73-80

5th verse .. 81-92
bag packed .. i was ready
to be gone early the next day
saturday night at the campfire
chris and cindi set their wedding date

honi was so damned depressed
she ran off down by the creek
and came back later with looney toons
she walked right up to me

and said let's go for a ride
under a full summer moon
we had the ride of our lives that night
a ride she won't forget soon

(repeat) hook .. 93-100

epilogue .. 101-114
chris and cindi got married on labor day
honi was the bride's maid
that was the last time i saw honi
her memory starts to fade

we rode looney toons
… (7X)

...and honi rode me
all the way
back home

I Looked Away

I Looked Away

Written by Eric Clapton & Bobby Whitlock
and performed by the Derek & the Dominos

She took my hand
And tried to make me understand
That she would always be there,
But I looked away
And she ran away from me today;
I'm such a lonely man.

It came as no surprise to me
That she'd leave me in misery.
It seemed like only yesterday
She made a vow
that she'd never walk away.

And if it seemed a sin
To love another man's woman, baby,
I guess I'll keep on sinning
Loving her, Lord,
till my very last day.

But I looked away
And she ran away from me today;
I'm such a lonely man.

For a brief moment, he considered not going in. When you’re from 2008 and traveling around in 1964, any minutia is disconcerting. Still he slung his Carry-All over his shoulder and confidently made his way to the front doorway. Once there, he was asked his name by the Captain. Without hesitation, Thom replied George Martin as he reached for his 2008 picture Driver’s License. He was somewhat surprised when the Captain asked him how his flight was. Still, Thom replied in the affirmative but continued to show his ID while holding his fingers over the date. The Captain briefly glanced at it and remarked to another Officer that ‘those British sure have modern looking IDs'. Thom was puzzled but continued on to the Front Desk. Once there, he spoke but only said George Martin. Again, he was asked how his flight was. For some reason, Thom thought it proper to throw a minor Cockney accent on his affirmative rejoinder. Thom knew something was awry when he was handed a room key and told the other four are already in their rooms. No money was requested and no ID was requested. And so he looked at his key and headed for the elevator. The key was for room 616 and so Thom entered the elevator and pushed 6 on the button panel.
.
On his way up, he was seriously considering dashing out of the Hotel because it seemed that there was a personal mix-up as to whom he was. This could only turn out negatively.
.
As the door slid open on floor 6, Thom saw several people and decided to continue onwards to 616. As he reached the room, he heard a definitive English accent. The voice said ‘oh, they gave you George’s room, ah, Mate ? Thom smiled and nodded his head. He finally looked up to see a very youthful Paul McCartney. He was shocked but the account was becoming clearer. Paul, again spoke saying that Thom must be a Special Operation Officer. Continuing that their Musical Director, George Martin did not make the trip.

… And so he looked at his key and headed for the elevator. ..

the harmonic traveler

1
after the sun had disappeared
over his shoulder
and the cooling of the soil
bathed his sore tired feet
he stopped to rest
his journey had not ended
after four moons
had passed over the darkness
exhausted by his travels
still, his soul and mind felt good
he saw creation's hand
around the apple
he was about to taste
and it was good

as he felt peace
he knew he was
in perfect harmony
he knew he was ...

chorus
just a part of the plan
to understand
all god's work
we're all a part of the plan
that's man (kind)
doing god's work
this is all a grand plan
planned grandly
we're a part of god's work

2
whereupon darkness
soon covered the land
smothered in silence
as a warming fire
sparkled upon the surrounding land
the weary traveler sleeps
he will travel all day
untill two more moons pass
to reach his destination
he is the traveler
and he is good
doing his work
and as he lays
in the angelic softness
of a grassy meadow
he slumbers

and all is still good
all is peaceful
and he knew it was
in perfect harmony
and he knew he was ...

chorus ( repeat )

3
and as the sun
peeks over the eastern horizon
the traveler has moved on
without leaving a scar upon the land
he will come upon a wide waterway
and climb many hills
before eating berries
god has grown for him
because god is good
god is love
god loves all
the traveler loves god
as he travels god's land
and god's land is good

it's sustainable
and is used such
in perfect harmony
and it is ...

chorus (repeat)
